"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers

of society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion by education."

Thomas Jefferson

Walt Whitman on baseball:

"Well, it's our game; that's the chief fact in connection with it: America's game; it has the snap, go, fling of the American atmosphere; it belongs as much to our institutions, fits into them as significantly as our Constitution's laws; it is just as important in the sum total of our historic life."

"There are only three things that America will be

known for two thousand years from now when they study this civilization: the Constitution, jazz music, and baseball. They're the three most beautifully designed things this culture's ever produced."

Gerald Early

Welcome to my home page!

Here you will find links to information about the ONL class that I teach, as well as contact information for me.

If you have enrolled in one of my ONL classes, or are considering doing so, click on the ONL Class link on the left as well as the FAQs about ONL classes link to learn more about my internet-based U. S. Government class.   If you're here to complete your online orientation, those are the two links that you'll need to visit first.

My main goal in my Online classes is to inform my students' political and civic "discretion" (see the quote on the left) by educating them about government and politics.  My students will likely forget many of the details of my courses, but I hope that they will remember the essence, and I hope that the essence helps to make them more informed observers of today's politics and policy-making as well as more effective and discerning participants in our political processes.

It is my hope that the structure and the various components of my ONL courses combine to produce a challenging, rigorous, enlightening, and interesting learning experience for my students.  It is also my hope that students leave my course with a greater appreciation for government and politics and with a more informed "discretion" that will allow them to effectively exercise their power and voice as members of a representative democracy.
