Women In Green Jobs: Susan Welker - Architect, Registered Interior Designer
As an architect I meet with people who want to have a space designed for their business, school or family. I chose to be an Architect because I can visualize solutions and communicate them to people. I love the "wows" that architecture can evoke in people, especially in myself. The favorite part of my job is helping people live and work in a better environment.
"Green Architecture is more than incorporating "green" materials into a building. It is about designing so there will be a future. "
Architecture is one of the more important "green" jobs because you synthesize the needs of the inhabitants with the need to sustain the earth for future inhabitants. As an Architect, you are responsible for the health, safety and welfare of those people who will be inhabiting or working in your design. You consider the life cycle of the building and how will it sustain itself and what energy features will be required for it to function.
