Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technology

HART 1407 Refrigeration Principles

HART 1407 is the student’s introduction to the refrigeration cycle of air conditioning and refrigeration systems.  This course includes basic thermodynamics, heat transfer, temperature/pressure relationship, safe handling of refrigerants, refrigeration containment, and refrigeration components.

Students have plenty of lecture time as well as hands-on labs

Soft-drawn copper is often used in refrigeration. Often two or more lengths of copper must be connected; students learn how to cut, swage (expand) and braze this type of copper.

The instructor shows how to swage one side of the copper.
A closeup of a cut piece after the student has swaged one edge.
Students measure and cut the copper...
...swage one edge and clean that edge...

...and crimp the copper to a smaller tube before brazing it.
The student confirms with the instructor that he's ready to braze the connections
Multiple students can brazeat the same time...
...and then they test their pipe for leaks.

In the second exercise, the student brazes different sizes of copper together...

...and shapes one of the copper sections by using a copper curler.

The second finished brazing exercise.
Students also learn how to recover refrigerant from air conditioning units and safely store it per EPA standards.

Time permitting, students might build air conditioning units with parts taken from old units.
