HPRS 1106 Essentials of Medical Terminology, PCM (1-1-0): A study of common medical terms, word origin, structure, and application. This is a 1-hour, short, abbreviated course of study highlighting major prefixes, suffixes, and word roots used in the medical arena. An overview of select abbreviations and symbols, surgical and diagnostic procedures, and pathological conditions will be discussed. This web course allows the flexibility of participating in individual study and group study. Internet access is required.

Prerequisites: Student must have comprehension of reading, writing, and speaking the English language for successful completion of this course. Students not proficient in English should contact Retention and Student Support Services for remediation and assistance.

HPRS 1201 Introduction to Health Professions, (2-2-0): An overview of the roles or the various members of the health care system, educational requirements, and issues affecting the delivery of health care. Guest speakers are brought in to discuss their professions.

HPRS 1206 Essentials of Medical Terminology, In class and distance learning offerings (2-2-0): A study of common medical terms, word origin, structure, and application. This is a 2-hour comprehensive study of word origin, which includes an introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, and plurals used in the medical arena. A complete body systems approach is used to focus on the anatomy and physiology, surgical and diagnostic procedures, medical specialties, abbreviations and symbols, and pathological conditions.

Prerequisites: Student must have comprehension of reading, writing, and speaking the English language for successful completion of this course. Students not proficient in English should contact Retention and Student Support Services for remediation and assistance.

HPRS 1303 End of Life Issues, (3-3-0): Topics address grief, loss, death and dying. Preparation for caregivers in health and related sciences to function in clinical settings where communication skills are used to give psychosocial support to dying persons and their families.

HPRS 1273/HPRS 1073 Pharmacology for Health Professionals, PCM (2-2-0): A study of drug classifications, actions, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, methods of administration, and client education.

Prerequisites: Completion of 4 hours of Anatomy & Physiology I (Biology 2401 or MDCA 1409 or BIOL 2404), or Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304/BIOL 2101) with a grade of C or better. This course is designed for Medical Coding, Medical Assistants, Medical Transcriptionists, EKG Technicians, and Dental Hygiene students. HPRS 2200 is not an acceptable course for Clinical Nursing, Surgical Technology, and Emergency Medical Service students. Bring proofs of prerequisites to the first class meeting (grade report or transcript). There will be no exceptions.

Note: this course can be taken in place of HITT 1249.

HPRS 2300 Pharmacology for Health Professions, In class and distance learning offering (3-3-0): A study of drug classifications, mechanism of action, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, methods of administration, client education, and calculation of dosages.

    Prerequisites: Anatomy & Physiology (4 hours) with a grade of C or better or pass the Pre-Pharmacology Assessment Exam (Click Here) and passed math assessment (Compass 39 or higher) or passed TASP/THEA Math (230 or higher) or passed a math course above MATD 0330 with a grade of C or better. Bring proof of prerequisites to orientation or first class meeting (grade report, transcripts, and math scores). Exempt students of TASP, need proof of a math course or the passed ACC Math Assessment.(AHS 1403). This course is designed for Surgery Technicians, Nursing, and Emergency Medical Service students.

HPRS 2301 Pathophysiology, In class and distance learning (3-3-0): Study of pathology and general health management of disease and injuries across the life span. Topics include etiology, symptoms, and the physical and psychological reactions to diseases and injuries.

Prerequisites: Completion of 4 hours of Anatomy and Physiology I (MDCA 1409 or BIOL 2401 or BIOL 2404) or Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304/BIOL 2101) AND a 1 or 2 or 3 hours Medical Terminology Course (HPRS 1106 or HPRS 1206 or HITT 1305). Bring proofs of prerequisites to first class meeting or orientation (grade report, transcript). There will be no exceptions.  This course is intended for Medical assistants, Medical Coding, Medical Transcriptionists, and EKG Technicians students, and recommended for nursing and other allied health science students.
