Description
All healthcare providers (hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, etc...) are required to follow the guidelines specified in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA requires all protected health information (PHI) be kept private and secure by all persons that handle, or have access to, that information. Since many healthcare program students, faculty, instructors, and staff use PHI as part of the educational process (i.e. students in the clinical setting, use of case studies, etc...), ACC (and all educational institutions) must ensure that these individuals have been trained on the specifics of HIPAA compliance. Therefore, all students and employees that come in contact with PHI as part of the educational process must complete this on-line training module on at least an annual basis to remain in compliance with HIPAA expectations. Students are typically not allowed to enter the clinical setting as part of their course work, until this training module has been completed.

Assessment Guidelines
For ACC to remain in compliance with HIPAA regulations, we must assure that all ACC students/employees have been trained on the specifics of HIPAA compliance. As proof of compliance with the training expectations of HIPAA, we will keep on file:
- the confirmation of the student/employee's training module Post-Test completion
- the signed "ACC Combined Confidentiality Form"
Failure of the ACC student/employee to complete this training module process may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the ACC Administrative Rule on HIPAA, the ACC Student Handbook, the course syllabus, and/or the individual's job description.
Non-ACC students/employees should consult their own institutions rules.
