Health Sciences Application Process
Important note: The Medical Coding program, whether taken through Continuing Education or for credit, requires the following application process and department chair approval. Please read the following instructions very carefully.

Program Selection: The class is selected based on the date that the completed program application is received in the Health Science admissions office. Application reviews begin on March 1st.

Medical Coding Certificate Application Process - College Credit

2011-2012 Certificate Tracking Worksheet
Step 1
- Apply to ACC
- Take placement tests in reading (Compass 81), writing (Compass 82) and math (Compass 39) unless TSI status is complete or exempt in all three parts.
Step 2
- Complete an Information Session.
- Information sessions are done Online.
- In addition to the application, the Information Session Completion and Declaratory Form must be submitted with the application. This form can be found under the Verification Tab on the Online Information Session.
Step 3
- Fulfill all immunization requirements. Your completed immunization form is due at the time you apply for program admission
- Immunizations should be completed while working on prerequisites.
Step 4
- Complete each of the following prerequisites with a minimum GPA of 2.0:
- Health Data Content (HITT 1301)
- Medical Terminology I (HITT 1305) must be a 3 credit hour course
- Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 2404) must be completed within 5 years of application date or must be repeated. MDCA 1409 will be accepted if it is within 5 years of application date.
To gain approval to take the prerequisites you must go to the Health Information Technology website at www.austincc.edu/health/hitt and complete/submit the Student Petition. Please include your name, student ID and which courses you want to take and the semester you want.
Step 5
- Submit application paperwork by the deadline. All applications are to be turned into the Health Sciences Office in building 8000, 8356 at the Eastview Campus or the Round Rock Campus, Building 3000, Room 3105. The application includes:
- Application
- Immunization records with all immunizations complete
- Medical Coding Information Session Completion and Declaratory Form.
- Department Chair signature.
Continuing Education Application for Medical Coding Certificate
The advantage of taking Medical Coding certificate through Continuing Education is that it is a less expense way for “out of district” students. However, the student must meet the same program requirements for applying as college credit students. It is possible to take the Medical Coding Program as continuing education (non-college credit) and then convert that coursework to college credit once the student has three (3) college credit hours at ACC. Students must request this conversion to college credit within two years of successfully completing the Medical Coding Certificate Program.
Step 1

- In addition to the application, the Information Session Completion and Declaratory Form must be submitted with the application. This form can be found under the Verification Tab on the Online Information Session.
Step 2
- If you have not completed MDCA 1409 OR BIOL 2404, Apply to ACC so that the prerequisite BIOL 2404 can be completed.
- Take placement tests in reading (Compass 81), writing (Compass 82) and math (Compass 39) unless TSI status is complete or exempt in all three parts.
- MDCA 1409 is no longer offered at ACC but will be accepted if it has been taken within 5 years of the application date
Step 3

- Medical Terminology I (HITT 1005) must be a 3 credit hour course
- Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 2404) must be completed within 5 years of application date or must be repeated. MDCA 1409/1009 will be accepted if it is within 5 years of application date.
