"Classification or grouping of humans primarily based on physical characteristics (e.g., skin color, hair color and texture, eye shape and color, height)" (McEwen, 2002, p 475)

For example: Caucasoid (white), Mongoloid (yellow), Negroid (black)

"Anthropologically, individuals from a given race have a common geographic origin of their ancestors" (McEwen, 2002, p 475).

  • African: Sub-Saharan Africa
  • American Indian: Western Hemisphere
  • Asian: Japan, Taiwan, Philippines
  • Australian (Aborigine): Native to Australia
  • European: Europe, Middle East, northern Africa, Australia, North & South America
  • Indian: South Asia
  • Melanesian: New Guinea, Solomon Islands
  • Micronesian: Caroline, Gilbert, Mariana, Marshall islands
  • Polynesian: South Pacific islands, Hawaii, New Zealand, Easter slands

US Census Bureau includes national origin groups, which "can be viewed as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. Office of Minority Health Definitions of Racial & Ethnic Populations:

  • American Indian & Alaska Native (AI/AN) Populations
    People having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment.
  • Asian American Populations
    People having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent.
  • Black or African American Populations
    People having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.
  • Hispanic or Latino Populations
    A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.
  • Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) Populations
    People having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.
  • Multiracial Populations
    People having origins in two or more of the federally designated racial categories.
  • White Populations
    People having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
