RNSG 1412 Hybrid Spring 2012

Orientation:

  • Date: Monday, January 17, 2012
  • Time and Place: 12:15 - 2:45 RRC; Room 3233.00.

Calendar: Spring 2012

Textbook: Maternal-Child Nursing. McKinney. 3rd edition. 2009.

Seminars:

  • When: Mondays from 9:30 - 12:30.
    • Seminars - you are strongly encouraged to attend seminars. They are scheduled periodically throughout the course. Check calendar for dates.
  • Where: Seminars - RRC, room 3222.

Tests:

  • Tests will be in the RRC nursing computer lab.

Labs:

  • Pediatric and Obstetric Lab attendance is MANDATORY at all labs.
    They will be mainly on Mondays at the RRC campus. See calendar for dates.
  • Simulation lab is TBA

Mastery Skills Check Off: Wednesday, January 18, 2012

  • There will be a comprehensive mastery skills check-off over previously learned skills
    • Injections (IM – various sites, sub-q, intradermal);
    • Catheterization (foley and In and Out);
    • IV’s (hanging a piggy-back, starting an IV, IV push, calculation of drop rate);
    • Trach suctioning and Trach care
    • Dressing changes, Central line, etc.
    • Medication administration – all forms including insulin
    • Documentation will be required.
  • Each student will be required to perform a minimum of two skills – one sterile procedure and medication administration.
  • You will be given a patient situation and have to complete several Skills satisfactorily.
    • The lab will be open the week before the semester begins if you want to practice.
  • You must pass this satisfactorily or you may be withdrawn from the course.

Hesi Specialty Test:

  • The HESI specialty test is a mandatory course requirement. You will need to pay $26.00 to take the specialty test.

Math Test:

  • You will be required to take a math test during the first week of the semester. This test is available in the RR testing center and you need to have it completed by January 18, 2012.

Clinical:

  • Clinical is divided into a pediatric and an obstetric rotation.
    • Each rotation is about 5 weeks.

First Five Weeks:

Pediatric Rotation:

  • Where: Dell Children's Medical Center
  • When: Wednesdays, Thursday, Friday or Saturday - 12 hours or two 6 hour days
  • COMPASS Training: please complete prior to beginning of the semester. Contact Marlene Meador at mmeador@austincc.edu for assistance.

Second Five Weeks:

Obstetric Rotation:

  • Where: North Austin Medical Center, St. David's Hopital or Seton.
  • When: Wednesdays and Thursdays with an additional Friday as needed.

Clinical / Course Requirements:

  • Students must bring to class the first day - "Clinical Pass". You will NOT be allowed to remain in the course without the pass.
