RNSG 1412- Nursing Care of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family

Level 3 EVC- Spring 2012

Orientation:

Textbook – McKinney, E..; James, S.; Murray, S.; Bindler, Ashwell, J.; Maternal - Child Nursing third ed. 2009: Saunders Elsevier, St.Louis, Missouri

Class:

  • When: Tuesday from 8:00 – 12:30.
    • Occasionally, an extended class time to accommodate a guest speaker.
  • Where: EVC Rm 8105


Tests:

  • Four semester tests and a final
  • Tests administered in the EVC nursing computer lab.
  • See calendar for specific dates


Labs:

  • Pediatric and Obstetric Lab attendance is MANDATORY. See calendar for dates.
  • MANDATORY simulations for this course currently scheduled for April 23, 2012 (subject to modification). Conducted in EVC skills labs.


Mastery Skills Check Off: Wednesday, January 18, 2012, EVC Skills Lab 08 - 1500

  • All students must complete the comprehensive mastery skills check-off over previously learned skills
    • Medication administration all routes
    • Catheterization (Foley and ‘in and out’ or straight cath)
    • Intravenous medications (piggy-back administration, starting an IV, calculation of infusion rate and IV push administration)
    • Tracheostomy care and suctioning
    • Dressing changes, etc.
    • Documentation required
  • Each student will receive a patient situation and complete several skills.
  • Each student must successfully complete mastery skills check off to continue in any Level 3 course.
  • Please utilize the available open lab times for practice.
    • Open lab time is available the week before the semester. Plan time to practice.
    • Reference the BlackBoard site for this course frequently for updates.


Dosage and Calculation Test:

  • All students must take a dosage and calculation test on January 17, 2012, starting promptly at 1:15pm in the computer testing lab at EVC.
  • You must successfully pass this exam to administer medications in the clinical setting.
  • Bring ADN Clinical Clearance Ticket as your permit into this exam.

HESI Specialty Test:

  • The HESI specialty test is a mandatory course requirement. Print and take the correct HESI Form (located here) to the bursar's office with the fee and bring the receipt with you to the computer lab for the HESI test. See the course calendar for date and time.

RNSG 1262 Childbearing and Childrearing Clinical

  • Clinical experience consists of two five-week rotations divided into a pediatric and an obstetric rotation.
  • Students who are co-enrolled in RNSG 1247 will also attend a five week medical/surgical clinical rotation.
  • Clinical Sites and Times Students are not allowed to re-arrange or trade clinical dates or locations in Level 3. Please contact Marlene Meador RN, MSN, CNE via email with any special requests for clinical scheduling or placement by January 11, 2012. mmeador@austincc.edu


Pediatric Rotation:

Preparation: PLEASE COMPLETE the COMPASS TRAINING PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF THE PEDIATRIC ROTATION

  • Where: Dell Children's Medical Center
  • When: Pediatric clinical days consist of 12-hour clinical days/evenings on either Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday hours or a combination of days and evenings. Specific groups assigned first class day.

Obstetric Rotation:

  • Where:
    • Seton Medical Center
    • Brackenridge Hospital
    • St. David’s Medical Center
  • When: Wednesday or Thursdays for 12 hours; or a combination of Wednesday and Thursday 6 hours each day.


Semester Requirements:

All students must present an ADN Clinical Clearance ticket to the Level 3 Coordinator to enter the dosage and calculation test scheduled for January 17, 2012 beginning promptly at 1:15pm. Failure to do so will result in withdrawal from the level.
