Application Process

Health Sciences Application Process

Admission to Austin Community College does not guarantee admission to a Health Sciences program. ALL Health Sciences program applicants must:

  1. Enroll in ACC Apply to ACC.
  2. Follow the application process steps for the Sonography Programs (see below)
  3. Collect the required documentation and/or complete all immunizations before applying for program admission.
  4. Submit your program application
    • To be compliant with clinical facility requirements, a mandatory criminal background check will be required prior to admission to the Sonography Program. As specific timelines must be met, do not do this until instructed by the Program.
    • To be compliant with clinical facility requirements, a mandatory drug screen is required for clinical rotations. As specific timelines must be met, do not do this until instructed by the Program.
    • To be compliant with clinical facility requirements, health insurance is mandatory for clinical rotations and is required for full admission to a Sonography Program. As specific timelines must be met, do not submit documentation of health insurance until instructed by the Program.

This Checklist and Applicant Ranking Worksheet are effective 6-20-2016 and replaces all previously published Checklists and Ranking Worksheets

It is your responsibility to check the Sonography Program website frequently for any changes/updates in requirements.

Steps 5 A., B., & C. may be done concurrently; all other Steps MUST be done in the order listed on the Checklist and below:

Step 1: Review the entire Sonography website and complete the mandatory online Information Session and Post Tests (Verifications).

Print out the following documents/forms. You will need these documents and forms when you visit with an AoS Advisor or Counselor (see Step 3A or B) and for your Sonography Programs Advising Session with Sonography Faculty

Step 2: Apply for Admission to the College

  • Follow the instructions/process at http://www.austincc.edu/apply/destinationacc.php
    • NOTE: Admission to Austin Community College does not guarantee admission to a Sonography Program
  • Sonography requires that the TSI status be complete or exempt.
  • Applicants with Bachelor's degree or higher MUST request transcript evaluation (see Admissions office for a Transfer Credit Evaluation Request form).

Step 3: Sonography Programs Advising Session (complete A or B)

  1. For applicants with 11 or fewer college credit hours:
    • Attend the Health Sciences Area of Study (AoS) Information Session and meet with an AoS Advisor.
    • Schedule your Sonography Program Advising/Information Session
      • Request your Sonography Programs Advising Session here. (My appointment time is: ______________________)
      • Documents you MUST bring to your Sonography Programs Advising Session:
        • Unofficial copies of all college transcripts (ACC and other)
        • Signed and dated Online Information Session Verification forms (Post Tests)
  2. For applicants with 12 or more college credit hours either at ACC or transfer and/or hold a Bachelor's degree or higher
    • Contact a Health Sciences Area of Study (AoS) Counselor for an advising session (recommend attending the Health Sciences AoS Information Session).
    • Schedule your Sonography Program Advising/Information Session
      • Request your Sonography Programs Advising Session here. (My appointment time is: ______________________)
      • Documents you MUST bring to your Sonography Programs Advising Session:
        • Unofficial copies of all college transcripts (ACC and other)
        • Signed and dated Online Information Session Verification forms (Post Tests)

Step 4: START YOUR IMMUNIZATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

    • The ACC Health Sciences Immunization Form MUST be used.
    • NOTE: If you are choosing to have the serologic testing for the MMR, and/or Hepatitis B, and/or Varicella requirements, the results MUST show immunity. Any serologic test results of "equivocal" require that you obtain the vaccinations as listed.
      • Contact the Health Sciences Compliance Coordinator (http://www.austincc.edu/health/immunizations.php) if you have questions about immunizations requirements and/or your immunization records. The Sonography Programs faculty cannot answer your questions about immunizations.

Step 5: Additional Sonography Application Requirements(Step 5A, B, and C may be done concurrently)

  1. Complete all prerequisite college credit courses; minimum to apply is a GPA of 2.7 in prerequisite courses
    • Historically a competitive GPA is approximately 3.5
    • Anatomy and Physiology I & II, College Algebra, and Applied Physics prerequisites must be completed within 5 years of applicaton date.
    • Prerequisite courses may be repeated for a higher grade 1 time within 5 years of application date.
  2. Sonography Lab Volunteer Sessions
    • Volunteer for DMS, DCS, and VT labs. Minimum of 1 session for each speciality is required (additional points can be earned on Applicant Ranking Worksheet for volunteering up to 4 sessions per each specialty lab session). You will receive your Sonography Student Lab Volunteer Session tracking form at your first volunteer session appointment. You MUST bring this form to every volunteer session appointment.

      • Call 512-223-0294 for DCS lab appointments.
  3. Formal Patient Care Education (minimum required to apply: Certified Nurse Aid training)
    • CNA courses are offered through ACC's Health Professions Institute. Call 512-223-7542 for more information.
    • If taking CNA at ACC, both NURA 1001 and NURA 1060 must be completed. A CNA license is not required to apply to a Sonography Program.
  4. Complete ATI TEAS (formerly TEAS V for Allied Health (formerly HOBET V) exam 1 time between January 1 and June 1 of the year of application.
    • Failure to comply with the above time frame and/or number of times allowed will result in 0 points in this criterion on the Applicant Ranking Worksheet.

    2. Additional information and study guides can be found through an internet search for TEAS or HOBET.
    3. Applicants who have taken the HOBET V or TEAS V for application to another Health Science Program OR who have reached the maximum number of times allowed by ATI to take the TEAS test, contact the Sonography Programs Department Chair for advising.

  5. Completion of Corequisite Courses on Degree Plan: additional points will be awarded for completion of any corequisite course (non-Sonography course) of the AAS degree plan.
  6. Formal Patient Care Education Greater than CNA: additional points will be awarded for completion of EMT-Basic or higher (LVN, RN, Rad Tech, Paramedic ONLY).
  7. Direct Patient Care Experience: additional points will be awarded for 80 or more hours of volunteer or paid patient care experience. Hours must ben in addition to Formal Patient Care Education Clinical Hours. The Patient Care Experience Form must be used: http://www.austincc.edu/health/sono/documents/PatientCareExpDocumentation13.pdf to document your additional patient care experience hours. *Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Office Assistant (front office) and/or other medical office duties do not qualify for direct patient care hours.

Step 6: Apply to a Sonography Program

  1. Submit your Immunizations Record according to the instructions on the Immunization section of the Health Sciences website. NO waivers are allowed for any of the immunization requirements for Sonography.
    • Immunization records uploaded into the CastleBranch system is accessible by any Health Science Program including Nurse Aide Certification.
  2. Submit your On-Line Application Form between April 1st and June 1st
  3. Submit your Application Packet Documents (Your name MUST be on each document.) into the Castle Branch system. All uploaded documents must be on a single page.
    • Information Session Verification
    • Sonography Program Advising form
    • ATI TEAS exam results
    • Sonography Student Lab Volunteer Session tracking form
    • Certified Nurse Aide (or higher) training completion documentation (diploma, certificate, or completion verification letter on intitutional letterhead)
    • Patient Care Experience Form (if applicable) completed by supervisor/employer

    (5:00 p.m. of the next business day if the deadline dates falls on a Saturday or Sunday).

Selection for Admission to the Program

Sonography Applications are kept on file for one year; if the applicant does not re-apply by then end of the next application period, then his/her application file is purged from the Sonography files.
