Frequently Asked Questions
spacer
  • Is there a waiting list?
The surgical technology program may have a waiting list. If so, it is usually a one class delay. For example, if you wanted to start in the August class but were placed on the waiting list, you would be one of the first names on the January class list.

  • Can the surgical technology program be taken in the evening?

No, all surgical courses are during the day. Classroom times typically start at 8:00 am – 9:00 am and go until 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Clinical hours are 6:45 am – 3:00 pm (12:00 pm on Fridays).

  • Do we actually go to the real operating room and work with real patients?

Yes, the clinical component is an important part of the program. During the first semester you will be learning theories and skills in the classroom and laboratory. After the first eight weeks of the first semester, you will begin to go to the clinical sites. This first semester clinical is primarily an introduction to the operating room. The second and third semester clinicals are where the major clinical experiences are gained.

  • Are there physical traits that may hinder progression in the program?

Possibly. Surgical technologists must have adequate vision and hearing and must be able to physically handle standing for long periods of time and holding heavy objects. Surgical technologists must have good hand-eye coordination as well.

  • I have a medical degree from outside the US, or I have a degree that relates to healthcare and surgery. Will I be able to test out of the program’s required classes and get a certificate or degree in surg tech?

No. The surgical technologist’s role in the operating room is a specialty area that is not taught in any other program. You will have to enroll in the entire program.
