Congratulations on your admission into the Vocational Nursing Program. In the near future, you will face many nursing challenges. Until then, you face the following to-do list. It is subject to change and you should check back at least once a month to ensure you have the latest instructions:

STEP ONE: Complete Criminal Background Check (CBC) Implementation Process
- Incoming Students for Spring 2012
- We can only use CBCs from Pre-Check, we do not accept DPS background checks.
- Background Checks may be ordered between: October 1 - December 1
- Click here to be taken to the Background Check page. Select the Pre-check website. You must select the form designated for the ACC Licensed Vocational Nursing Program. It is highly recommended that you submit this form as soon as possible so if there are any discrepancies you will have adequate time to resolve the issues.
- Please review the community standards criteria that are used to determine ineligibility for clinical placement at http://www.austincc.edu/health/background.php. If you have concerns about any events in your background, you may contact the Texas Board of Nursing at www.bon.state.tx.us (512-305-7400) to determine your eligibility to take the licensure examination. Any applicant with an adverse criminal background history is required to present documentation from the licensing board, if the board will make a determination, in order to be accepted for admission.
- CBC must come back "Clear" before permission will be given to register.
- The Nursing Office will send an email when we receive the notification of your clear CBC giving permission to register.
STEP TWO: Obtain a physical and Tb Skin Test using the HEALTH DATA /PHYSICAL EXAM FORM.
- HEALTH DATA/PHYSICAL EXAM FORM.
- This form must be signed by a physician or a nurse practitioner only. Both front and back of the Health Data Form must be completed.
- A Tb Skin Test is good for one year, there are new TB skin test regulations. Please refer to the Health Data form for specific information before obtaining test. Additional information about the 2-step TB test can be found here.
NOTE: Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) Method:
1st Test Negative: Repeat TST in 1-3 weeks 2nd Test Negative: Person probably does not have infection Positive: Boosted reaction due to infection in the past - If you are required to receive a Chest X-ray, please submit a copy of the report.
- Flu shots are required by the facilities for clinical rotations. Please refer to the following webpage for all flu information http://www.austincc.edu/health/flu_shots.php Do not turn in your flu shot information with your packet. You will retain it for proof at the hospitals.
STEP THREE: Order clinical uniforms
From either TOTAL UNIFORMS locations: 1301 34th St. (phone # 452-5391) or 209 E. Ben White #200A (phone # 441-1525). See "Dress Code" in the VNG Program Student Handbook for details. Estimated cost for two sets of scrubs, a lab coat (opt.) and 3 school patches is approximately $100. A deposit of $40.00 is preferred at the time the order is placed.
Deadline: January 4, 2012
Purchase the following uniform accessories at any uniform or medical supply store by January 17, 2012:
- watch with a second hand
- stethoscope (must have bell and diaphragm-rec. Littman or Sprague)
- pen light
- bandage scissors
- protective goggles
STEP FOUR: CPR Certification- AHA Only
- Must be American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
- The card must say American Heart Association- Health Care Providers.) If the CPR card that you have expires before June 1, 2012you must retake it before the semester begins and present the copies of the card with the rest of the required documentation.
- If you turn in a CPR card that doesn’t meet the above requirements you will be required to retake the course.

STEP FIVE: Complete Clinical Modules
All incoming students must complete all of the following modules and post test before December 14th.
Print the confirmation page (last page) and submit with your completed packet.

- Spring 2012 Student Handbook- READ the Handbook and then print and sign the last page, Statement of Understanding. (Handbook will be posted by December 1, 2011)

***If you do not have a copy of the last page then you will have to redo the module you are missing. Make sure you are doing your modules with a printer for your printed confirmations.
STEP SIX: ACC Email
- Set up your ACC Gmail Account.
- All communication from the department will only be sent to ACC Gmail accounts.

STEP SEVEN: Register for Vocational Nursing courses during the registration period
Permission to register will not be given until clearance from Criminal Background Check is received from agency. Your space will be reserved until the completion of that process.
- Follow the registration instructions in the Spring 2012 Course Schedule. Pay your tuition and fees according to the procedures included in these registration instructions.
- Please follow the directions carefully. Register for only one synonym number in each of the following courses: VNSG 1115, VNSG 1423, VNSG 1160, VNSG 1304, and VNSG 1400. If the section you are trying to register for is full, go to the next section.
- If you have received a “C” or greater in Microbiology, you may substitute it for VNSG 1115.
STEP EIGHT: Turn in your completed packet by December 14th.

- Copy of front and back of AHA-BLS CPR Card
- Signed Health Data Physical/Tb Form- copy of Chest X-Ray if applicable.

*NOTE- Please make yourself a copy of all submitted items before you turn in your packet. We DO NOT make copies.
Once your completed packet is turned in you will receive a “Clinical Clearance Ticket” for the spring semester. This ticket will be given to your instructor and it is your confirmation that you are complete and clear for clinical for the spring semester.
Failure to turn in the required documents by the deadline will result in your position being forfeited. You will need to reapply.
Failure to defer before December 14 (5 p.m.) will result in your application being moved to inactive status and you will need to reapply.
