Course Description: Students set-up their workout schedule (must be completed at the Riverside Campus). This course was designed to provide the assessment of fitness level and self guided instruction of fitness. It includes the meaning and use of selected physiological parameters of fitness, weight training, flexibility, and wellness concepts. Orientation must be attended. Wear proper workout clothing that will allow for free and comfortable movement and clean athletic shoes to our gym.
 Guidelines for Workout and Evaluation:
All credited workouts must be completed at the Riverside facility, no other.  Commuting is not an excuse for completing workouts or turning in assignments.  If this course does not work into your schedule or convenient for your workout completion, I advise you to choose another course that will work for you.  An Information form must be filled-out completely before you are allowed to workout. You may begin workouts after the health information has been turned-in and reviewed. Workouts must take place in the Riverside Gym, 1169 or Riverside weight Room, 1160. You must log-in and out with the lab assistant on duty.  All workouts and records must be completed by Thursday, December 10th .  You are required to take care of a withdrawal by November 23rd if you are not able to or decide not to continue in this course.

You will not be able to pass this course without having completed the minimum of 24 workout hours regardles of other accumulated points from assignments, exams, and fitness assessments. All workout credit must take place only at the Riverside gym.

Workouts must take place at the Riverside facility lasting a minimum of 20 minutes and no longer than two hours. In order to achieve a positive workout habit and avoid potential injury, no student will be allowed to count more than 2 hours of workout per day nor accumulate more than 6 hours of workout per week. Always be sure to check-in and check-out with the lab assistant or your time will not be counted.  You are required to keep a daily log of exercise either using from from Blackboard or those for weight training and cardio-exercise provided in the text. Workout hours are posted on the gymnasium door and are available from my web site. Utilize streaming videos on the gym computer exercise guidelines for instruction and on how to plan your weight training and exercise program.  This guide can also be accessed from my web site.  You are REQUIRED to logon to Blackboard and do assignments and see your posted grades. You will be able to track accumulated points and assignments completed in Blackboard from the Tools tab and clicking on My Grades. Blackboard uses ACCmail but you can have ACCmail sent to your personal email account.

NOTE: The term "workout" is defined as time spent enhancing fitness NOT studying, conversing, daydreaming, or using your cell phone, etc.  The course relies heavily on the integrity of each student to be accurate and honest about each workout period.  Although the lab assistants at the facility are not "police", they do perform limited monitoring of students on site.  When students are observed abusing their integrity, lab assistants will write a brief report to me upon which I will issue a warning to the student. For each subsequent observation of abuse, the student will be contacted and the final grade will dropped one letter. You are not allowed to use cells phones during timed in exercise---you be warned one time then be withdrawn on a second offense.
Written Exams - 20%
Mid-term Exam = 10%
Final Exam = 10%
Take exams only at the Riverside test center by the deadline outlined in the assignments agenda. Utilize the chapter assignments and questions as well as read the text material to study for these exams. I will try to get study guides up on Blackboard for these exams.
Assignments - 25%
You are required to purchase a textbook.  When you purchase your textbook check to see that all worksheets are there; used books will be missing required assignments and photocopies of the lab forms from the text will not be accepted, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have something missing, take the book back immediately to get one with all the assigned labs.  Identify all worksheets you hand-in with your full name. I understand that you can now purchase lab sheets online from the publisher.   All page numbered assignments will be found in the text and the “worksheet” assignments can be found on Blackboard. You are required to logon to update ACC Blackboard with ACC’s gmail address at: https://acconline.austincc.edu/webapps/login .  You will have to active this account and be responsible for checking it weekly if not daily or miss out on communications from me through Blackboard: http://www.austincc.edu/accmail/  Take care of this detail so you don’t start out behind.

All assignments must be in by the due date for credit. Original copies of assignments (NO copies) will be accepted and must be submitted to the mailroom staff located on the second floor of building A- 2209; the staff will stamp them in with the time and date.  To receive credit, the assignment must be be submitted as scheduled and be stamped by the mailroom staff, A-2244.  Early submission of assigned labs is acceptable for full credit.  Any assignments submitted beyond seven days or one week beyond the due date will not be credited. Work submitted within the seven days beyond the deadline will be deducted 10%.
Do not throw away any worksheets; they may be recalled in case of a completion dispute. Keep track of work you have submitted through the Blackboard Grade book.  Resubmit any work I have given a grade and failed to file in grade book for you.

Fitness Assessments are counted as part of your Assignments when completed and submitted.  Come according to time you signed up for at Orientation. Sign-in with the lab assistant.  Bring text pages57/58 to record pre-test results. Wear tennis shoes and shorts to allow accurate skin-fold measurements during the skin-fold assessment.  The 1-mile or 1.5 mile test should be run by you at a location of your choice; you may use the treadmill.  Be on time to allow for group testing. You'll receive workout credit for attending the pre-test and the post-test on your workout records.  If you can not attend the assessments, you have the option of getting the self- assessment guide and doing pages 57/58 on your own. There is a guide posted to follow for Self-Assessment on Blackboard.

Conference - 5%
Each student should schedule a conference with me to review workout progress.  The conference may take 15 minutes to 1 hour in length.  Bring your personal daily exercise logs with you. If you need assistance prior to this mid-way conference, you can set on up with me much earlier to get the help you need and you will receive credit for the conference without coming in again unless it is something you feel you need to do.

Grading Scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59

Instructional Methodology: This class is an activity and participation course; the specific task/exercise(s) for students to complete will be viewed by CD from RVS library, streaming video online, and through textbook description. Students will then complete the task/exercise(s) to the best of their ability.  Pre and post assessments will be administered to help the students evaluate their current physical condition.  Students will attend self-selected workouts and times at times according to open gym hours at the Riverside
campus only.  Students will follow the syllabus and agenda given to them at the required orientation and logon to Blackboard for further assignments, communication with the instructor and to track their progress.  Students are required to purchase an unused textbook that includes an exercise log booklet.  Computer use is required whether it is your own or one in an ACC computer lab, or public library (any computer with internet access).

Course Rationale: The purpose of this course is to learn the specific skills and/or the techniques of the activity. By actively participating in an activity class, the student may gain health benefits such as increased cardiovascular endurance, improved body composition, increased flexibility, increased muscular endurance and increased muscular strength. Participating in activity classes leads to a healthier lifestyle.
Departmental Objectives:

Kinesiology Department Policies
Health Information Form:  ALL students will complete health form prior to participating in class. Those students who require modification of any specific activity or exercise need to inform the instructor as soon as possible.  Cell phones, food, gum, and soft drinks are not allowed in classrooms/workout areas. Proper workout shoes and clothing are required.
Attendance: All students are expected to attend classes.  Non-attendance will have an impact on the student’s grade. The specific attendance policy for this particular class is as follows:
Withdrawal: It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from a course.  Instructors are allowed to withdraw students but students must not rely on their instructor to withdraw them if they wish to withdraw.
Incomplete: An incomplete (I) will be granted to a student in rare circumstances. Generally, to receive a grade of I, a student must have completed all examinations and assignments to date, be passing, and have personal circumstances that prevent course completion that occur after the deadline to withdraw with a grade of W.

College Policies
Scholastic Dishonesty: Acts prohibited by the College for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and unauthorized collaboration with another in preparing outside work. Academic work submitted by students shall be the result of their thought, research or self-expression. Academic work is defined as, but not limited to tests, quizzes, whether taken electronically or on paper; projects, either individual or group; classroom presentations, and homework. (Student Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 32). Penalties for scholastic dishonesty will depend upon the nature of the violation and may range from lowering a grade on one assignment to an F in the course and/or expulsion from this institution.
Academic Freedom: Each student is strongly encouraged to participate in class. In any classroom situation that includes discussion and critical thinking, there are bound to be many differing viewpoints. These differences enhance the learning experience and create an atmosphere where students and instructors alike will be encouraged to think and learn. On sensitive and volatile topics, students may sometimes disagree not only with each other but also with the instructor. It is expected that faculty and students will respect the views of others when expressed in classroom discussions. Students may achieve their course goals by more than one method.
Student Discipline: Classroom behavior should support and enhance learning. Behavior that disrupts the learning process will be dealt with appropriately, which may include having the student leave class for the rest of that day. In serious cases, disruptive behavior may lead to a student being withdrawn from the class. ACC's policy on student discipline can be found in the Student Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 32.
OSD (Office of Students with Disabilities) Statement: Each ACC campus offers support services for students with documented physical or psychological disabilities.  Students with disabilities must request reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities on the campus where they expect to take the majority of their classes. Students are encouraged to do these three weeks before the start of the semester (Student Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 14)
