Description
Aerobics
exercise is exercise to music. Students will be provided with an opportunity to
strengthen their cardiorespiratory system, decrease percent body fat, tone and
firm muscles. This course is designed to increase energy, mental clarity and
health as a part of one's lifestyle. The class will incorporate high, light,
and low impact movements, flexibility. Some classes incorporate bench-step,
slide, kick-boxing, body sculpting, NIA dance, and circuit aerobics.
Aerobic exercise is an activity
in which you will be able to
Instructional Methodology
This class is an activity
and participation course; the specific task/exercise(s) for students to
complete will be demonstrated. Students will then complete the task/exercise(s)
to the best of their ability. Students
set the pace for their personal aerobic activity intensity.
Purchase Bishops Fitness
Through Aerobics AND READ IT. Wear
comfortable, nonrestrictive attire allowing free movement. A good aerobic shoe is necessary for your
safety and coordination. Get a shoe that
offers support for your arch, heel, and mid-sole as well as one that will stand
up to lateral movement and give adequate traction. Running shoes or fashion canvas shoes are not
appropriate. Your commitment by
consistent attendance is a must in achieving or maintaining excellent physical
fitness and to earn a good grade. Attendance
will be taken at the start of class; if you are tardy, see me at the end of
class to avoid being marked absent. The
roll will not be changed after the day it is taken. Chapter lectures will be given at the
beginning or at the end of class sessions.
You are to fully participate by having read the material and by paying
attention during the chapter discussions.
A warm-up is the first portion of the workout to prepare you for
exercise. Those who miss the warm-up are
required to warm-up individually on the exercise bikes. Warming-up helps avoid muscle and joint
injuries. We will then exercise
aerobically for 15-30 minutes. Listen to
your body and work at your own pace and level.
Some will need a low step while others may need to add some height and
work at a higher intensity to get to a proper workout level. Monitor your heart rate at the perceived
exertion level. After the aerobic
workout and cool-down, there will be muscle toning and strengthening to promote
flexibility and reduce muscle soreness.
You will need aerobic shoes, non-restrictive attire, and plastic water
bottle. No juice, sodas, or food are allowed in the
gym. Be hydrated, avoid running to the
bathroom during class, and eat at least one hour before a vigorous workout.
No use of cell phones or pagers during class; alert
tones are to be turned off during class. This will
result in one point deducted from your grade for each infraction.
Course Rationale
The purpose of this course
is to learn the specific skills and/or the techniques of the activity. By
actively participating in an activity class, the student may gain health
benefits such as increased cardiovascular endurance, improved body composition,
increased flexibility, increased muscular endurance and increased muscular
strength. Participating in activity classes leads to a healthier lifestyle.
Departmental Objectives:
ATTENDANCE.........................................
..

50%
Specific
make-up arrangements must be made with me.
Please keep me informed if a problem arises. Attendance will be calculated according to
the number of classes missed: 3-50Pts, 4-45 Pts, 5-40 Pts,
6-35 Pts, 7-30Pts. Extended
illnesses are not excused. You
are responsible for dropping your own class if you choose not to complete the course requirements.
You will be at risk of failing when you have missed 7 or more
classes. Incompletes will only be
awarded if coursework is 70% completed and your average is 70% or better. Tardies that accumulate to 15 minutes will
deduct one point from the total grade (there will be a running tally; every
minute counts.) No use of or answering cells phones; one point will be deducted for each
infraction of those who allow their phone to ring or use it during class time.
SKILLS TEST.........................................

Two
aerobic skills tests will be given throughout the session. Areas tested will be a step test to determine
aerobic efficiency, abdominal test to determine aerobic efficiency, and
abdominal test to determine strength and endurance, an upper torso test also to
determine strength and endurance, and a sit and reach test to determine
flexibility. These tests will be given
at the beginning of the semester to identify your level of fitness. Final skills tests will measure
improvement. No one will fail the skills
tests regardless of ones level of fitness as long as you are in class on the
assigned test date to take the skills test.
Each skills test is worth 5 points. You must attend the assigned skills test day
to earn points; make-up skills tests must be completed within one week of the
original assessment date for partial credit; you must run assessments yourself
using text instructions.

Withdrawal
It is
the students responsibility to withdraw from a course. Instructors are allowed to withdraw students
but students must not rely on their instructor to withdraw them if they wish to
withdraw. The last day to withdraw is April 18th.
Incomplete
An
incomplete (I) will be granted to a student in rare circumstances. Generally,
to receive a grade of I, a student must have completed all examinations and
assignments to date, be passing, and have personal circumstances that prevent
course completion that occur after the deadline to withdraw with a grade of
W.
College Policies:
Scholastic Dishonesty
Acts prohibited by the College for which discipline
may be administered include scholastic dishonesty, including but not limited to
cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and unauthorized collaboration with
another in preparing outside work. Academic work submitted by students shall be
the result of their thought, research or self-expression. Academic work is
defined as, but not limited to tests, quizzes, whether taken electronically or
on paper; projects, either individual or group; classroom presentations, and
homework (Student
Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 32). Penalties for scholastic dishonesty will
depend upon the nature of the violation and may range from lowering a grade on
one assignment to an F in the course and/or expulsion from this institution.
Students with Disabilities
Each ACC campus offers support services for students
with documented physical or psychological disabilities. Students with disabilities must request
reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities on
the campus where they expect to take the majority of their classes. Students
are encouraged to do these three weeks before the start of the semester (Student
Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 14).
OSD
(Office of Students with Disabilities) Statement: Each ACC campus offers
support services for students with documented physical or psychological
disabilities. Students with disabilities
must request reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with
Disabilities on the campus where they expect to take the majority of their
classes. Students are encouraged to do these three weeks before the start of
the semester (Student
Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 14).
Academic Freedom
Each student is strongly encouraged to participate in class. In any classroom situation that includes discussion and critical thinking, there are bound to be many differing viewpoints. These differences enhance the learning experience and create an atmosphere where students and instructors alike will be encouraged to think and learn. On sensitive and volatile topics, students may sometimes disagree not only with each other but also with the instructor. It is expected that faculty and students will respect the views of others when expressed in classroom discussions. Students may achieve their course goals by more than one method.
Student Discipline
Classroom behavior should support and enhance
learning. Behavior that disrupts the learning process will be dealt with
appropriately, which may include having the student leave class for the rest of
that day. In serious cases, disruptive behavior may lead to a
student being withdrawn from the class. ACC's
policy on student discipline can be found in the Student
Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 32.
