What is advising?
Departmental advising is a required process for all first-time and returning students of the Hospitality, Meeting and Event Planning, and Travel and Tourism programs. In practice, you will meet with the department chair, full-time faculty, or a trained individual of the department who can adequately advise you on the appropriate classes to take based on your program of choice and the predetermined courses within the degree plan. In doing so, the department strategically approves you for classes based on your progression and status in the program.

This process is of value for this department and our students because of the severity and firmness of the courses within each degree and we want to ensure that each student is successful as they progress through their program. The advising process is also a very critical step because of the course of action we take to make sure enough seats are available to the students within the programs of Hospitality Management, Meeting and Event Planning, and Travel and Tourism.

As a precaution we lock all courses that are not introductory. A granted petition will be needed to register for the locked classes and can only be given through an advising session.

Why is advising important?
Advising is an important process because it supports the overall mission of the college by partnering with our students in achieving their academic goals. It is also a major requirement of our accreditation guidelines and we value the ability to meet and complete the advising process with you.

This step is essential in your academic career to ensure an efficient and effective learning environment in the classroom. Advising assures you stay on track for your degree plan while keeping you focused on your goal.

Also, advising keeps you informed of the latest course offerings and changes while giving you priority registration for course offerings.
