The Writer's Block is designed as a tutoring component to help the African-American men in ACC's retention program, Men of Distinction, with their writing deficiencies. The young men are tutored each Tuesday for two hours. During each session, the young men interpret and discuss a quote, improve vocabulary, learn and practice grammatical rules, and develop skills to structure academic papers. They are also able to have one-on-one sessions with me to discuss their class assignments. These tutoring sessions have given the young men the opportunity to enhance their writing skills and actively help each other, thus decreasing one of the factors affecting retention rates.
