New Intern

Maybe by now you may have heard about our new addition to the Professional Development family. Jennifer Gray's been quite "productive" lately, (as in reproductive) and had a bouncy boy last September. We've already got him assisting us with some budget breakdowns using Excel. You can see our new intern in action in our two-minute holiday greetings video card if you missed it earlier.

Student E-Mails Reveal “Why It’s All About Me”

An article in the New York Times (Feb. 21, 2006), entitled, "To: Professor@University.edu—Subject: Why It’s All About Me," indicates that community college faculty are not the only teachers who receive e-mails from students who are increasingly demanding and presumptuous. Even professors at prestigious universities find themselves overwhelmed and amazed by the practical results of communicating electronically with some students. See full story in TCCTA's Community College Digest.

TCCTA right around the corner (It's not too late to attend)

As you plan your renaissance hotelprofessional development activities for the upcoming year, keep in mind that the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) Convention offers a large variety of discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary professional development activities as well as sessions on retirement planning and fitness.  The convention, scheduled for February 22-24, 2007, is being held this year at the Renaissance Austin hotel.  The convention theme of this 60th annual convention is “Shaping the Future:  Designing the Plan.”

ACC pays the $50 registration fee for ACC faculty who attend the convention. You must be a member of TCCTA to attend the convention. Payment for registration is handled in this way:  all members of TCCTA are automatically registered for the convention, so you do not need to pre-register. ACC will be billed for only those faculty members who actually attend the convention. To learn more about the convention, go to http://www.tccta.org/convention/index.html.

Librado Buentello
Lee Buenello

New Help Desk Manager, Librado Buentello (who goes by Lee) came onboard during the Ice Storm of 2007 (dramatic music rises). Coming to us from the trenches of Dell, he worked in their Technical Support Enterprise Center for the past seven years. His management experience spans a 23-year period working with such industries as Wireless Communications Technologies and Southwestern Bell Communications. Lee's focus will be improving the functionality of the Help Desk and working cross functionally with Department Heads to improve the level of support.

Lee has worked and traveled internationally and even met the President of Panama while working there. Interesting snippets about him include being sent by Dell to work with the aerospace industry and running a coffee plantation in his younger days in Costa Rica. If you make it over to the Service Center, stop on by the IT area, yell "HELP," and he may just come running to see what you need.
