man leapingEvaluation: P.E.P. is Here

It’s time for P.E.P. annual evaluations.  If you are a supervisor, you should complete the evaluations for your employees during April and May. Here is the link to download the P.E.P. forms: http://www.austincc.edu/hr/eval/forms/empperfrev.pdf.  Please check our website http://www.austincc.edu/hr/eval/supervisors.php for more information about the evaluation process.

If you are unsure about the process for annual evaluations, there are multiple workshops available entitled, The A, B, C, and Ds of Evaluation.  The workshops will cover the overall idea behind evaluations, the ACC process for evaluations, supervisor and employee requirements, and best practices for giving and receiving feedback.

Achievement of High School lonelyStudents National Not Improving

While education officials are celebrating improvements in achievement test scores of younger students in reading and math, the scores of older students have remained flat. "The academic achievements of our high school students do not appear to be improving," said Darvin M. Winick, chairman of the National Assessment Governing Board. The assessment comes from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which released a report describing the results of testing 11,000 students aged nine to 17. The younger students showed progress compared to previous assessments, but 17-year-olds scored the same as before. Read more in TCCTA's Community College Digest.

What Do We Know for Sure about Adult Learning?

Faculty who have been with ACC for some years might remember an article frequently distributed through the Professional Development Office, and a standard part of the old “Mentor’s Packet,” titled “30 Things We Know for Sure About Adult Learning.”  The article first appeared in Innovation Abstracts in 1984.  The source for it was actually an issue of Training Magazine from the late 70’s!  The information was good then, and it’s still good now.  An adapted version can be found here.

Beyond art and style, there is a science that supports good teaching and learning practices, and I thought it time to “upgrade” the 30 Things with some more current research and observation.  A favorite article of mine is, A “Teacher’s Dozen:” Fourteen General, Research-Based Principles for Improving Higher Learning in Our Classrooms

The original article was published in AAHE* Bulletin, April 1993, following a conference presentation by Thomas Anthony Angelo of Classroom Assessment Techniques’ fame. The full article may be found here. It’s a good read. As an incentive to read the article, I have added the article for professional development credit in our online Teaching Strategies modules via Blackboard.  Check the Workshop Database and search for “teaching strategies.” Or you can try a really short version of Angelo’s 14 principles instead.
