Professional Development Opportunity at TCCTA

The 61st Annual TCCTA Convention will be held February 21-23, 2008 in Dallas at the Fairmont Hotel, offering educators a wide range of educational presentations. Topics run the gamut from successful teaching tips to financial planning. In addition to discipline-specific workshops, there will be GIFTS sessions covering such subjects as "Maximize the Group Work Experience in your Classes," "The Changing Roles of the Instructor in the Online Classroom," and "How to Improve Student Learning." To learn more about the convention and its offerings, please go to http://www.tccta.org/ and click on Events on the lower right hand corner of the page.

ACC pays the convention registration fee for faculty to attend the TCCTA convention, but you must be a member to attend.  So, in order to attend you must first join the organization (ACC does not pay membership fees) at http://www.tccta.org/; once you are a member, you will automatically be registered for the convention.  You should not pay for registration for the convention because when you attend, ACC will be sent the bill for your attendance.  Please note that ACC pays registration only and does not pay travel costs unless you acquire that funding from your department.

john's picJohn Caporusso Retires this Month

By P J Caporusso, Professional Development & Evaluation Programs

I’m coming out of the corner and taking a seat in class, now that I am retiring from ACC at the end of January.  Hard to believe it’s been 25 years since I started here.  I won’t be too far away though.  I’ll still be teaching periodically in CE.  Other than having more time in general, I’ve looked forward to being a student again.  I’m enrolled in two CE and one credit class for this semester, so I’ll get my money’s worth out of my parking tag.

Our InfoStream editor, Merrilee Shopland, suggested I write something about my 25 years in higher education here at ACC. I don’t have enough space for that, and you don’t have enough time.  What I will say is that I remember when the phrase lifelong learning was introduced and Malcolm Knowles made popular the term andragogy.  I was mature enough to grasp the truth and reality of those concepts, and I think life is longer when we hold on to our enthusiasm for learning.  Learning is growing, and growing is evolving, and that’s how I feel about this “retirement thing.” I’m not stopping—just making new connections that are taking me to new places for learning.

If you missed the invitation, we’ll be celebrating and reminiscing on Thursday, January 31, 3 p.m., HBC 201. RSVP Nicole Bell, 223-7997.  Otherwise, I may see you in class.
