Professional Development Opportunity at TCCTA

texas map and tcctaThe 62nd Annual TCCTA Convention will be held February 19-21, 2009 in Austin at the Renaissance Hotel, offering educators a wide range of educational presentations. Topics run the gamut from successful teaching tips to financial planning. In addition to discipline-specific workshops, there will be GIFTS sessions covering such subjects as “Implementing Computer-Based Experiential Learning in the Classroom.”  The general session speaker will address “Knowledge in the Age of Connection,” and the Professional Development session will focus on “Uncovering Implicit Bias.” To learn more about the convention and its offerings, please go to http://www.tccta.org/ and click on Events on the lower right hand corner of the page.

ACC pays the convention registration fee for faculty to attend the TCCTA convention, but you must be a member to attend.  So, in order to attend you must first join the organization (ACC does not pay membership fees) at http://www.tccta.org/; once you are a member, you will automatically be registered for the convention.  You should not pay for registration for the convention because when you attend, ACC will be sent the bill for your attendance.  Please note that ACC pays registration only and does not pay travel costs unless you acquire that funding from your department..

evaluation updates

Class Climate - As you know, we are for the first time using Class Climate software and processing for all evaluations for the Fall of 2008. We piloted the software in the fall of 2007 with select departments and used it for spring and summer 2008 evaluations; this was our first opportunity to use it for our largest and most challenging evaluation cycle. Thank you for all the feedback we have received thus far.EVALUATION

Evaluation Results Via Email - The subject name of the email is created automatically by this software; for all the emails sent out prior to today (1/21/09), the subject line in the email was “Class Climate survey: [SURVEY name, e.g. HIST 1301-001]”.  However, for clarity, from today onward, the subject line of emails will say “Evaluation Results Class Climate survey: [SURVEY name].”

In order for faculty members to obtain their results each semester, they may want to consider adding the Class Climate emails to their safe senders list or adding the recipient as a contact (in Outlook 2007, select “Actions”, “Junk E-Mail”, and “Add Recipient to Safe Sender’s List”; in ACC Webmail, choose to add the recipient as a contact).  In doing so, faculty will more likely have immediate access to the results in their inbox and will not have to search through their “spam” messages in order to find the evaluation emails.

Scan Quality of "Comments" - In regards to scan quality, the zoom feature in Adobe will let you enlarge any digital image up to 6400%. With this feature, anything that was written in pencil or was illegible can be expanded in your computer and you can read just about anything on the page.

Spring Evaluation Requests - Please spread the word that spring and summer evaluations are “BY REQUEST ONLY.” The request link is on our website: www.austincc.edu/hr/eval/requests/evalrequestform.php. The earlier you can request the better for our office; March 9 is the cutoff date for spring evaluation requests and July 1 for the summer requests.

For more information contact, Faculty and Staff Evaluation Coordinator Martha Perez, Ph. D. at 223-7745 or mperez3@austincc.edu
or go to the evaluation website at www.austincc.edu/hr/eval/

Profile

The Networkthe network

The Texas Network for Teaching Excellence in Career and Education was developed with a Perkins Leadership grant.  ACC is the Fiscal agent for the grant, and Terry Stewart Mouchayleh is the Project Director.  Grant partners are TCCTA, Del Mar College, Midland College, Lone Star College, Dallas Community College District, and the Virtual College of Texas.

The Network is an innovative way to connect to free, online professional development resources for career and technical education faculty, counselors, and administrators. Search easilyat http://txpod.org/ through hundreds of topics and teaching modules. It's all in one free, easy to use site created by a partnership of community college professionals from across the state.

New Professional Development Coordinator

christina michuraChristina Michura moved over a thousand miles from Columbus, Ohio, to take her new seat as Professional Development Coordinator in Professional Development and Evaluation Programs. Christina is not new to Austin and even taught for eight years at ACC as an Adjunct Faculty Member in Speech and Communications. She also taught full-time for Central Texas College in Killeen, where she received Employee of the Year, and served as the Director of Forensics (that's the Speech and Debate Team, not the crime scene). Her background in education covers a wide spectrum including adjunct work at Franklin University and Columbus State Community College while serving as an Academic Advisor at Ohio Dominican. Christina's Master's Degree in Organizational Communication includes an emphasis in Professional Development/Training as well as a specialization in Higher Education.

When not moving, teaching, or working on her Doctorate in Higher Education Administration, Christina can be found with either a camera in hand taking pictures or with a leash, being dragged by her dog "Ivan the Terrier." She's also got the full scuba diving rig and certification, so feel free to blow her a few bubbles if you pass her office in the Human Resources area of HBC.
