Teaching Excellence Awards

Who do you think should get an ACC Teaching Excellence Award for 2009? Help us by submitting a nomination form either online or in a Campus Manager’s Office. It’s easy. Just mention what makes this professor special. Is it

- The way they interact with students?
- Knowledge of their teaching field?
- Creativity and innovation in the classroom?
- The way they present knowledge?

Nomination Deadline is April 10, 2009. To nominate online go to http://www.austincc.edu/hr/profdev/awards/bestprof.php, fill out the pdf form and hit the submit button. For questions, contact Christina Michura at cmichura@austincc.edu or 223-7564.

Celebration of Great Teaching

cgt - group shotCommunity Building, Critical Thinking, Classroom Management, and Student Preparation were just a few of the topics covered during the Celebration of Great Teaching Retreat 2009 held in Bandera, Texas, from February 27th – March 1st. The successful and eventful retreat provided Austin Community College faculty members an opportunity to exchange ideas and information with one another! Twenty-two of ACC’s finest faculty members embarked on an educational journey along with three ACC facilitators (David Lydic, Lara Niles, and Joyce Guillory), who guided the retreat.

We look forward to your application next year for the Celebration of Great Teaching Retreat 2010. Please check the Professional Development website frequently for updates.

The Philosophy Behind the Celebration of Great Teaching

Austin Community College’s Celebration of Great Teaching is based on the national Great Teaching Seminar, a movement begun in 1969 (taken from David Gootshall and Roger Garrison). The time we spend together is like no other professional development you will encounter. Many have said it is the best professional development of their career.

The Celebration is based on the premise that teachers learn teaching best from other teachers and that creativity is enhanced by mixing teachers of diverse teaching fields, experience levels, and interests. The emphasis is on the universals of teaching and on the special nature of those who are and aspire to be great teachers. If properly tapped, the collective wisdom of practicing educators surpasses that of any expert.
