You probably know some coworkers whose spouse or family member has
lost their job and as a result are experiencing more financial strain in their
life than they ever have before. Or you may be one of these folks. Those
workers who are left working are experiencing a great deal of stress too
because now they have to find ways to do the work of two people. As a
result many employers are grappling with a rise in workplace suicides.
There has been a 28% increase in the number of suicides committed in the
workplace since last year. If you notice any of the following signs in your
coworkers it might be an indication that they need intervention: 1) Talking
about suicide 2) Making statements like “I wish I were dead” and “I’m going
to end it all”. 3) When someone starts winding up their affairs. 4)
Uncharacteristically isolating themselves from others in the workplace. 5)
Giving away cherished possessions. If you sense a problem, ask the
person direct questions, let your supervisor know so they can contact EAP.
