About the Career

Addictions counseling professionals help people through public health agencies, youth services, residential treatment programs, hospitals, out patient substance abuse programs, and homeless shelters. Addictions counseling professionals generally work as part of a treatment team that includes social workers, psychologists, and other health care workers. They must be licensed in the state of Texas as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC).

What can I expect to earn?

Starting salaries for Counselor Interns generally range from $22,000-$25,000 per year and for LCDC’s from $26,000-$36,000. According to the Texas Employment Projections 2002-2012, job prospects in this field are increasing.

About our program

The Addictions Counseling Certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree prepare students for careers in counseling and direct care work in the addictions field. Individuals wishing to become Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC) must have a minimum of a two year Associate’s degree. However, they are eligible to start their 4000 supervised work experience as registered Counselor Interns, and take the LCDC exam after completing 270 education hours and a 300-hour practicum, which can be satisfied through our Certificate program. Individuals with prior college degrees that lack alcohol and drug courses may opt to enroll in our program either through Continuing Education or college credit.
