Art Metals

art metals

Beauty is born of cold, hard metal

Shaping metal into objects that are both awe-inspiring and functional is an ancient art form alive and well in ACC's Art Metals Program. Talented and accomplished teachers pass on generations of trade mastery in a series of course offerings, including metalsmithing and metal sculpture. Students learn to create objects of artistic, decorative, or utilitarian value from one or more types of metal by welding, brazing, soldering, riveting, or a combination of techniques. Students who earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology with an emphasis in Art Metals also have an opportunity to become certified as a professional welder. Certificates in Art Metals and Metal Sculpture are also available.

What skills can I gain?

Students develop the ability to shape, fuse, and join various types of metal for form, function, and artistic expression. In addition to practical and marketable welding skills, students learn to apply creativity, sensitivity, and finesse for the purpose to their works, which are created for the purposes of both pleasure and profit.

How long will it take to get a degree or certification?

It typically takes students at least two years to complete an associate degree, which can be the foundation for a four-year degree. Certificates take less time, involve fewer foundation classes, and are often preferred by people already working in the industry or those not seeking a degree.

Where can I work with this education?

Metal artists can earn income from their works through gallery, private, or commission sales. Employment opportunities in production metals shops are becoming increasingly common as the industry experiences a resurgence.

Students who earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding Technology with a specialization in Art Metals will possess skill levels to earn income in both the technical and structural welding industries. In the final component of the degree program, students take the American Welding Society Certified Welder exam, which is the primary certification for professional welders.
