Registering
for Classes
Students needing to register for classes
should contact either:
- Dr. Patti Singleton, a deaf counselor at the Riverside
Campus, 223-6262 voice (Relay Texas dial 711) or drpatti@austincc.edu
OR
New students: There are some things that you need
to do before you can register for classes:
-
Apply online (preferred) or in person.
-
Make an appointment with OSD and tell them you need an interpreter. You will need to bring 3 things
with you to the appointment: proof of deafness i.e. copy of your audiogram, a letter of
recommendation, and a letter from you telling why you want to go to
ACC. If you have transcripts from another school bring them too.
At the appointment you will choose a date to take an assessment test.
You will also need to attend the ACC Orientation for all new students.
Ask your advisor for the dates.
-
After the assessment, make another appointment with OSD for advising. Bring your test scores with you, if you have them.

Student
Responsibilities:
- Register early-Students with
Disabilities may participate in Priority/Early Registration which takes
place about 1 1/2 months prior to the beginning of classes.
- Talk with OSD about accommodations i.e. interpreters,
note takers, etc. http://www2.austincc.edu/osd
- Show up for classes-the first
class and every class is IMPORTANT, don't miss it!
- When you can't attend class call Interpreter Services as
early as possible (233-6151 use Relay-711). You should try to call at least 24
hours in advance.
- If you do not show up for a
class 3 times without calling Interpreter Services, the
interpreter for that class will be cancelled for the rest of the semester.
- If the interpreter does not show
up, wait for 15 minutes, then call Interpreter Services or go to the
OSD for help. We will try to get a substitute for you, but we cannot promise.
- If you need a special
interpreting arrangement, like tutoring, study groups, or a field
trip-please request an interpreter at least 3 days before it happens.
- If you have a problem with your
interpreter, you need to talk with your interpreter first, then if
that does not work you can talk to the Interpreter Services
Supervisor.
- If you decided to drop a class,
you need to (1)
meet with a counselor first, (2) fill out the
drop form to officially drop the class (teachers may not do this for
you), (3) inform Interpreter Services immediately, and (4) let OSD
know if you also receive help (notetakers, etc) for that class you
dropped.

Helpful Hints
- Communicate with the interpreters about your needs.
- Have the instructor's contact
information; phone number, and email address. If you will be
absent, you need to contact the teacher yourself and Interpreter
Services.
- Pay attention to class lectures;
if you are not
interested in what the teacher is saying don't start chatting with the
interpreter; the interpreter is paid to work.
- Ask for help from the teacher or from a tutor, before you get too far behind. You should also visit the Tutoring Lab
for more help with your class.
- Let the teacher know you are
having a problem. If you don't understand a question on a test
ask the teacher if the interpreter can interpret that question...but
remember the interpreter will NOT tell you the answer.
- Talk with the teacher and a
counselor before dropping a class. You might think you are doing poorly but
you may be doing fine.
- If you need to withdraw from a
class know the deadline to withdraw from classes.
