Professional Qualifications of Irwin A. Tang, Editor and Co-Writer

Irwin A. Tang will edit, co-write, and promote Asian Texans.

During the 2002-2003 school year, Tang was appointed a Research Fellow at the Center for Asian American Studies at UT Austin to research the history of Asian Texans. Tang established the Asian Texans History Project.

While earning his M.A. in Asian Studies at UT Austin, Tang wrote a master thesis in the area of Asian American Studies. Entitled, "Not in Vain: A History of the Politics of Anti-Asian Violence in the United States Since the Death of Vincent Chin," the thesis examined the history of organizing efforts, bureaucratic reform, and legislation surrounding the issue of racial violence. Tang's thesis advisor was Dr. Edward J.M. Rhoads, an expert on the history of Chinese Texans.

Tang holds a Master of Professional Writing degree from the University of Southern California. His essays, editorials, articles, photographs, and fictional stories have been published in national magazines, newspapers, journals, and books.

In the year 2000, Tang published The Texas Aggie Bonfire: Tradition and Tragedy at Texas A&M, a book on the culture and history of Texas A&M University and its annual bonfire. Upon publication, Tang launched a public information campaign that involved numerous appearances on the front page of The Houston Chronicle, an interview by ABC News (national), and appearances on Texas news programs, newspapers, and radio and television shows.

More recently, Tang's 2003 media campaign concerning certain racial taunts in the NBA led to a debate among national sports media about race and sports.

In 1995, Tang co-led the campaign for the establishment of the Center for Asian American Studies at UT Austin. In 1993, Tang, at the behest of union leader Cesar Chavez, worked as a community organizer and publicist for the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO.

Tang has served as the fiction editor of The Southern California Anthology and as a consulting editor for Kyung H. Kim's Therapeutic Parenting (Hopewell Publishing).
