The first Asian Texans were Chinese Americans from the western states, most of whom had worked on the first transcontinental railroad. Pictured here crossing the frozen Missouri River on their way to Texas, they worked in 1870 on the Houston & Texas Central Railroad and later sharecropped.

The Asian Texans History Project researches, documents, collects, chronicles, publicizes and teaches the history of Asian Americans in Texas. The Asian Texans History Project (ATHP) was established by Irwin A. Tang in 2002.
