How To Use The MyMathLab Software With Online or Printed Textbook

Below is the recommended order in which you should work through your assignments, for maximum benefit:

Instructional Aides in MyMathLab

Each section contains online video lectures, animations, and example problems. These video lectures are a required substitute for the learning that would otherwise take place in a classroom, and it is recommended that this is where you start. View the lectures and animations, and pause as needed to work through the You Try It examples before attempting any homework problems. Read through the pages in the textbook for a more thorough explanation. For detailed step-by-step instructions on how to complete the lessons, please refer to the handout Recommended Instructions for Completing Each Section in MyMathLab.

Homework

Homework problems consist of two types: Online Homework problems from MyMathLab and Written Homework problems from the textbook. Both are required and contribute to your grade.

Online Homework

As soon as possible after completing the video lectures and animations and reading the section(s) in your textbook (either online or printed version), start on the online homework problems from the corresponding section(s) in MyMathLab. These problems often have instructional aides, and give immediate feedback, which is why we recommend that you do the online homework before the written homework. We especially recommend using the Help Me Solve This button while working online problems because this is a very interactive way to learn how to work the problems. It guides you step-by step through each math concept.

You must complete each assignment with a score of 80% or better before continuing to the next section. You may attempt each problem as many times as necessary. If you are stuck, get help from your classmates, from me, from ACC's Learning Labs, from free online tutoring, or from Pearson's toll-free telephone tutoring service. See my help web page, which also has information about free technical support, for more details.

Written Homework

After completing the online homework, do the assigned written exercises from the textbook. Written homework may be submitted in person, by scanning it and attaching it in Blackboard, by fax, or by mail. See the Weekly Schedule at my handouts web page for details.

Online Quizzes

Quizzes are given online, a few quizzes for each chapter, in MyMathLab. These quizzes are required and also contribute to your grade. Take the online quiz shortly after completing the homework for all of the sections that are covered on the quiz. You must complete all of the online homework in the corresponding sections with a score of 80% or higher before attempting the quiz. You are also expected to score 80% or higher on each quiz.

Quiz deadlines are stated in the Weekly Schedule (see handouts link above).

Each quiz may be taken up to three times. The highest score out of all attempts for each quiz is the only score that will count. If you do not score at least 80% in your 3 attempts, please contact your instructor for help.

Tests

All tests, including the final exam, will be written exams, given in the ACC testing center that you specify on your online orientation in Blackboard. These tests must be taken by the stated deadlines. Students who submit an appropriate accommodations letter may also take their tests at an ACC Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). As soon as tests are available in the testing centers and OSD centers, you are welcome to take them. I will notify the class by email when the tests are available.

For more information about testing policies, please refer to the Weekly Schedule and Syllabus for your course, posted at my handouts web page.
