Textbook and Software

The textbook for MATD 0330 Basic Math Skills is Prealgebra, 4th edition, by Blair, Tobey, and Slater.

Please note that if you are repeating this SAME course using the SAME book and have already registered in MyMathLab for this SAME course, you will NOT need to buy new MyMathLab access, and it is highly recommended that you enroll in an on-campus section of this course. In addition to enrolling in this course, please consider simultaneously enrolling in a one-hour math lab course MATD 0011 Developmental Mathematics Lab, which will provide regular help with this course. For more information about how to register in MyMathLab for a different section of this SAME course or to register for a new additional course in MyMathLab, please refer to http://www.austincc.edu/jbickham/ChangingCoursesInMML.pdf.

If you have NOT already registered in MyMathLab for this course, the following information applies to Janet Bickham's distance learning and computer-mediated sections of this course:

The MyMathLab access kit (software) may be purchased alone and is required in all Distance Learning and Computer-Mediated classes. Purchasing that access (kit or code) by itself costs about $80 plus tax, and includes an online copy of the book with solutions. If you prefer a printed copy of the book, be sure to buy a NEW book that says that it comes with MyMathLab access inside. You may buy this NEW book with MyMathLab access from either an ACC bookstore or from the book's publisher (Pearson), but be sure that it comes with MyMathLab access.

A used copy of the book and/or an e-book will NOT include the access to MyMathLab, which is required in this course. It is also more expensive to buy the MyMathLab access kit (software) with a separate used book than to buy a NEW book that is already packaged with MyMathLab access inside. Inquire carefully before you purchase your textbook, if you choose to buy a book and not just the MyMathLab access kit alone (that comes with the book and solutions online). Do NOT buy an e-book, and ONLY buy a USED book if you already have MyMathLab access for this course and decide you now also want a printed copy of the book.

If you choose to purchase a NEW book, you may buy either the bound version, which can be sold back to ACC bookstores at the end of the semester, or the loose-leaf version, which CANNOT be sold back and which requires a 2-inch, 3-ring binder to hold the loose pages. Both NEW versions of the book, bought at an ACC bookstore or from the publisher (Pearson), must say that they have MyMathLab access because some NEW versions of the textbook do not.

For more information about purchasing and registering for MyMathLab, see the Information about MyMathLab handout at http://www.austincc.edu/jbickham/handouts. If you are registering for a new additional course in MyMathLab, please follow the instructions at http://www.austincc.edu/jbickham/ChangingCoursesInMML.pdf.

See below for more information about purchasing options.

Purchasing Options

Please note that if you are repeating this SAME course using the SAME book and have already registered in MyMathLab for this SAME course, you will NOT need to buy new MyMathLab access, and it is highly recommended that you enroll in an on-campus section of this course. If you have NOT already registered in MyMathLab for this course, the following information applies to Janet Bickham's distance learning and computer-mediated sections of this course:

In addition to purchasing either a MyMathLab Access Kit (with online book and solutions) or a NEW textbook with MyMathLab Access from an ACC bookstore, here are some other ways to purchase MyMathLab:

  • You may purchase a Student MyMathLab Access Kit online from Pearson Higher Ed for about $80.00 by following the instructions in the Information about MyMathLab handout.
  • Student MyMathLab Access Kits are available at other retailers, such as amazon.com. Use caution, as the product is not guaranteed by Pearson when purchased anywhere other than an ACC bookstore or the Pearson website (above).
  • A new textbook bundled with MyMathLab may also be purchased from another retailer. Make sure the product specifically indicates a bundle including both the textbook and the MyMathLab software.

Purchasing a USED book is not generally recommended because the combined cost of a USED book and MyMathLab access normally is more than the cost of a NEW book that includes MyMathLab access, but you must verify that the NEW book does come with MyMathLab access.

For more information about purchasing and registering for MyMathLab, see the Information about MyMathLab handout.

Registering with MyMathLab

Please note that if you are repeating this SAME course using the SAME book and have already registered in MyMathLab for this SAME course, you will NOT need to buy new MyMathLab access, and it is highly recommended that you enroll in an on-campus section of this course. In addition to enrolling in this course, please consider simultaneously enrolling in a one-hour math lab course MATD 0011 Developmental Mathematics Lab, which will provide regular help with this course. After purchasing an access code, you will need to register in this section of MyMathLab. You should do this no later than the first week of class, partly because the first assignment is due early in the second week. Information about registering is included in the Information about MyMathLab handout. If you cannot purchase MyMathLab right away, it is possible to gain temporary access. Please contact your instructor for details.

 Get Supplies

In order to complete this course successfully, you will need the following supplies:

  • Notebook Paper for working problems at the computer and while doing your homework assignments
  • Pencils (or Pens) with Erasers
  • An Inexpensive (Usually $15 or Less) Very Basic 4-Function Calculator (like those allowed while taking the THEA or T-COMPASS), which you will use much later in the semester, including on the final exam. If you already have a portable (battery-operated or solar) 4-function calculator, you may use it. If you need to buy a calculator, they may be found at most grocery stores, office supply stores, or large discount stores.

 Complete The Online Orientation Quiz

If you have not already done so, please complete your online orientation quiz in Blackboard. You do NOT need the MyMathLab access or book in order to complete the online orientation. Just read the information in the web pages and handouts, and you should be able to answer the questions. After you have completed the online orientation quiz and have received feedback explaining what you missed and where to get that information, if you still are unable to find the information you are looking for, please contact me. If you have not completed the orientation with a perfect score by the end of the first week of classes, you may be dropped from the course. Completing this online orientation as early as possible helps your instructor distribute tests to all Testing Centers and all ACC Offices for Students with Disabilities so that you may begin taking tests as early as possible. However, please be aware that Blackboard is usually not available for students to access until one week before the semester begins. So sorry!
