Accent Marks in Spanish

This is a tutorial explaining how accent marks are used in written Spanish. It is aimed mainly at people who are studying Spanish as a foreign language. It should also be useful to people who speak Spanish but have not studied the language in school. It is not aimed primarily at absolute beginners. The Spanish used in the examples, while fairly simple, is generally not translated into English.

Using this Tutorial

This tutorial consists of a series of short lessons. To work through them, start here and use the blue arrows at the bottom of the page to move forward or backward. You can also use the menu on the left side of the page to go directly to a specific lesson.

Most lessons include brief multiple-choice quizzes that allow you to test your understanding of the material. To take a quiz over a lesson, simply click on the Quiz button at the bottom of that lesson's screen.

Typing Accent Marks

This tutorial covers how accent marks are used in the Spanish language. It does not explain in detail how to type accent marks on your computer. The best way to do that is to add an additional keyboard layout to your operating system. Here is Microsoft's explanation of how to do it under Windows (including an option to configure it automatically). Here is a simpler and friendlier explanation for Windows XP, Vista, and the Mac.
