Welcome

This is not your on-line orientation but a good way to know the course and the required texts.

TEXTS: Roberts and Jacobs, An Introduction to Reading and Writing 8th, Ed.

Elizabeth F. Penfield, Study Guide: Literary Visions 8th, Ed.

ITV MATERIAL: 26 Televised Programs (streamlined, rented, or on cable )

Prerequisites: Comp. I and Comp. II at ACC or equivalent.

Course Goals: In this course you will be introduced to three main genres of literature: prose fiction (short story ), poetry, and drama. You will learn about the elements and characteristics of this literature through readings and televised videos. The expectation is that you will become more knowledgeable, appreciative of, and interested in a wide variety of serious literature.

Important Note: A significant difference between this course and my regular literature courses is that in an ITV course, my lectures and discussions are replaced by videos and extensive readings.  Motivation and self-discipline is crucial. I am available for one-to-one discussions during my office hours; contact and communication will be important--especially if you are lost! As all literature courses, this course includes a strong writing component.

Requirements:        Completion of all reading assignments.

Three tests administered in a testing center

                              One take-home analytical term project/paper.

Grading: Each assignment will include written instructions and grading criteria.

                              75% for three tests.

                              25% for one term paper/project

Attendance: All students must attend one orientation session.  All students must contact/meet with the instructor at least twice, especially to check for progress, grades, etc. Check office hours and come see me. All students must complete tests when assigned and meet deadlines as stipulated in the syllabus. Failure to meet deadlines constitutes a lack of progress.  You may be withdrawn from this course due to a lack of progress.

Scholastic Dishonesty: Acts prohibited by the College for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing and unauthorized collaboration with another in preparing outside work. (See ACC’s Policies on Scholastic Dishonesty in your Student Handbook.)

Students with Disabilities: Each ACC campus offers support services for students with documented physical or psychological disabilities. Students with disabilities must request reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities on the campus where they expect to take the majority of their classes. Students are encouraged to do this three weeks before the start of the semester. (See ACC’s policies on Students with Disabilities in your Student Handbook.)

One week before the semester begins:

1.        There is link to Blackboard (bottom right-hand corner) on the ACC homepage.

2.        Once you are at the site, follow the instructions on Getting Started With Blackboard and update your personal information. This is very important because if your e-mail is incorrect, you will not get my messages, contacts, etc.

3.        After this, you can click on your course (our course) and begin the on-line orientation.
