Brinkerhoff, David and L. White, Sociology, (3d),1991, SOCI 1301.TAJ.25006B,Sociology in Everyday Life pp.164-185.  A summary of interaction methods. I recommend this for all students regardless of which theoretical approach you are using.

Goffman, E.,  Interaction ritual, 1967, SOCI1301.TAJ.22496B Studies of interaction differences; embarrassment, alienation and other studies contributing to a civil society.

Goffman, E.The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life,  HM 291. G6  This is the classic study by the man most highly recognized in the use of symbolic interaction and dramaturgical research.  Skim through this work and you will find dozens of examples of observational research.

Goffman, E.Relations in Public, HM 131. G55 Analysis of public, face-to-face, encounters and rules of social behavior.

Levin, WilliamSociological Ideas, HM 51. L3595, & SOCI 1301.TAJ.25009B Chp.4, 5, and 6 present the basic sociological theories and how they are used  to interpret social behavior. See the section, "Application", in each chapter on the use of theory.

Macionis, J., Sociology , SOCI 1301 TAJ. 22881B and 25005B, “Dramaturgical Analysis:  The presentation of  self". This is an excellent summary of interactionist analysis.

Richlin-Klonsky, Guide to Writing Sociological Papers.SOCI1301.TAJ.22727B This book will help you understand the method of data collection used in observational research. Do not use the writing format suggested in the book.Read chp 8 only.

Smith, HermanStrategies of Social Research. HM48 .S55,  See chapter 10 on field research methods and practical techniques  to follow in the observation process.
