Assignments for each of the Units:
- Examine four or five of the suggested Web sites to become familiar
with the contents of each, and how to navigate through the sites.
- Share two or three interesting features, or facts, from the sites with the class by posting them through e-mail.
- Send your instructor an e-mail of a possible oral report you would like to do on the basis of your research on the Web.
The objectives for Unit I are:
- Compare and contrast the cultures of two (2) of the following Indian "nations" during the
17th century: the Creek Confederary; the League of the Iroquois: the Pueblos; the Wampanoags.
- Describe the types of interaction between Native Americans and the French during the "colonial" period and the results of these intercultural contacts.
- Describe the types of interaction between Native Americans and the English during the "colonial" period and the results of these intercultural contacts.
- Discuss the attempts of Atlantic seaboard confederations of Indians to deal with European incursions in the 17th century and the results for the Indians.
The objectives for Unit II are:
- Compare and contrast the religious teachings of Handsome Lake and Tenskwatawa.
- Describe the cultural renaissance of the Cherokee nation from 1800 to 1830.
- Explain the Indian removal policy of Andrew Jackson and its impact upon Indian tribes.
- Discuss the policies of concentration and reservation and their impact on the Indian tribes' cultures.
The objectives for Unit III are:
- Compare and contrast U.S. Indian policies during the 1860-1880 period with the policy of assimilation reflected in the Dawes Act.
- Describe American attempts to educate and missionize Indian tribes in the late 19th century and Indian responses to those efforts.
- Explain the origin, teachings, and results of the Ghost Dance religion of the late 19th century, and the Native American Church of the early 20th century.
- Discuss the approach and policy of the Bureau of Indian Affairs during the first quarter of the 20th century and theNative American response.
The objectives for Unit IV are:
- compare and contrast the intent, provisions, and results of
the "termination" policy of the Eisenhower administration
with the "self-determination" policy of the Nixon administration
- describe the attempts by Native Americans since World War
II to preserve Indian cultures, and the results of those efforts.
- understand the philosophy, actions, leadership, and results
of the American Indian Movement.
- determine the legal actions taken by Native Americans since
1970 to secure tribal, water, and land rights and the results
of those legal battles.
