"List Serves" (or"listserv") are locations which enable you to participate in on-going on-line discussions on a wide variety of topics. You may simply choose to read the e-mail messages posted by the list server, or join in the discussion by e-mailing ideas or information you want to share with others who have subscribed to the listserv.

I will cite one listserv location which I have found interesting, and describe how to subscribe and use the service. This is a site operating out of Texas A&M University which has four different discussion groups each focusing on a specific aspect of Native American history and culture. You may subscribe (always at no cost) to whichever ones interest you most.

To subscribe you send an e-mail message to "LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU" (note that LISTSERV@ ends with @, not an e - that the fourth letter in TAMVM1. is a V, not a U - and that the last figure in TAMVM1. is a 1, not an l -it took my four tries before I got it right!). The message will read simply:

"subscribe NATIVE-L" (the general discussion group)(" not needed) and/or

"subscribe NAT-LANG" (language is the topic) or

"subscribe Nat-HLTH" (health is the topics) or

"subscribe NAT-CHAT" (variety of topics)

Once you have subscribed you will be notified if your subscription is accepted, and then you may send e-mail messages to: (for example)

NATIVE-L@TAMVN1.TAMU.EDU. DON'T send messages to the listserve - that handles subscriptions and commands. You may get information on listserv commands by an "Info Refcard" command (e-mail) to the listserv address.

As always, if you have difficulty with this e-mail me a message.
