BOARD OF TRUSTEES "KUDOS" REPORT, 03-04-02

  arrow.gif (1026 bytes) Faculty/Program Achievement

* The Austin Community College Library Information Literacy Program has been selected for inclusion in the Association of College and Research Libraries Best Practices Conference (which will precede the American Library Association conference in Atlanta this June).

Two librarians (Teresa Ashley, Red Wassenich), one administrator (Julie Todaro), and one classroom faculty/instructional designer (Tina Buck) will team with other libraries whose programs were also identified as exemplary to establish program characteristics that can be adopted by other colleges.

The ACC information literacy program has collaborated with classroom faculty to teach research and critical thinking skills for over twenty years, currently reaching over 8,000 students per year. Last year, information literacy classes were integrated into 415 classes (including all sections of English Composition I and Chemistry I) and 4436 students attended presentations. This year, a web-based tutorial, "The Info Game," http://library.austin.cc.tx.us/infogame.htm has been integrated into English Composition I and Introduction to Business courses.

* Dr. Alan Rasco was notified by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners that the ACC August 2001 Vocational Nursing graduates had a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-PN (licensure exam). Congratulations to Pat Recek, program coordinator, and the VNG faculty for their continued outstanding job teaching the students enrolled in the program.

* Red Wassenich was featured recently in John Kelso's column of the Austin American-Statesman. In the article, Red, a professor of Library Services at ACC since 1984, and a rare Austin native, is credited for concocting the "Keep Austin Weird" bumper stickers seen around Austin.

* Pinnacle Campus History Instructor, Jeff Hunt, is helping to film a documentary about World War II. Jeff is also the curator of collections and the director of the living history program at the Admiral Nimitz National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg. Jeff and his museum staff are helping with the filming of two episodes on the Doolittle Raid and the Battle of Midway. In his role, Jeff dressed as a World War II U.S. Army Air Force lieutenant, sat in the cockpit of a World War II B-25 bomber while Oliver North spoke dialogue to the camera.

* The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has voted to award continuing accreditation to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, headed by Regina Swearingen, program coordinator. The next comprehensive evaluation of the program, including on-site review, is scheduled in 2006.

* ACC and Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in College Station have signed an agreement to ensure that ACC students transferring to the university's biomedical science undergraduate program won't lose any credit hours. Starting with the Spring 2002 semester, students completing an associate's of science degree can be admitted into the biomedical science program at Texas A&M provided they meet all the requirements.

ACC was one of 10 Texas community colleges selected to participate in the program and has a similar agreement with Texas A&M for its college of engineering.

* Cheryl Richard, Manager of Student Activities, has collaborated with Sharon Grady of the Department of Theatre and Dance with UT Performing Arts to begin the ACC Coffeehouse. UT students will perform in a coffeehouse setting for ACC students at the Rio Grande Lounge from 12-1 the first Wednesday of each month starting in February. Cheryl even got Starbucks to sponsor coffee for each date.

* An overview of the ACC Pinnacle Campus was featured in "Spotlight on Business" of the February Oak Hill Business and Professional Association Newsletter.

* On February 8, 2002 the American Advertising Federation held their annual competition known as the "Addy Awards." The awards honor excellence in advertising and cultivate the highest creative standards in the industry. ACC students compete with students from four-year universities such UT and Southwest Texas and succeed in walking away with just as many and in some cases, more awards than these four-year universities.

Due to the dedication of Andrew Saldana, program coordinator, and the Visual Communication Design staff, the presence of Austin Community College continues to grow at these competitions and is recognized by other institutions and the local industry.

The following is an excerpt from the "Addy Awards" printed program:
"Once again, Austin area students distinguished themselves, earning 21 awards and glowing comments from the judges. These winners will be forwarded to the district level to compete with schools from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. We wish them the best of luck!"

Visual Communication Design "Addy Award" winners were:
Single Entry Advertising: Marisha Hodges
Collateral Material, single entry only: Suzanne Rosato, Gardiner Rhoderick, Candan Serbest (2 winning entries), Stacy McDonald
Photography: Kim Johnson (3 winning entries)
Campaign, 3 to 5 pieces: Melody Rivera.
