  • The Arts and Humanities department headed by Dean Cynthia Cone, sponsored several special events in April including the 2nd Annual Fine Arts Festival, at which works by ACC faculty and students were featured. Scott Blackwood read his works at the Annual Spring Literary Festival. Other events included the ACC International Film Festival, the Drama department production, Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life, and Spectacle Danes Un Bistro.

  • Dorothy Barnett, founding director of ACC's Creative Writing program, and ACC instructors W. Joe Hoppe, and Marlyn West were speakers at the Round Top for Word Songs: The Storytelling Tradition in American Poetry, a weekend of poetry and literature, April 13-14.

  • Steve Rodi, Professor of Mathematics, was recognized for his outstanding work on the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) Survey 2000 Committee, which developed and conducted a quinquennial (since 1965) survey of collegiate mathematics in the U.S.

  • Herb Coleman, instructional technology manager and adjunct professor of psychology, presented his paper, "Instrumentality and Microcomputer Playfulness" at the ninth annual Student Gender Conference on Emerging Scholarship in Women's and Gender Studies, March 25-26.

  • English instructor, Sabrina Hassumani, has published "Salman Rushie: A postmodern Reading of His Major Works."

  • Tim Altanero, Technical Communications instructor, has an article in the March issue of Localization Ireland magazine entitled, "Localization - Deep in the Heart of Texas."

  • ACC's printmaking students and faculty were invited to join with the University of Texas Printmakers in this year's Steamroller Printing Event, "Diesel Brayer 2002."

  • Jan Smith, program coordinator of International Business, received thanks from the Office of International Business, Texas Economic Development, for her contribution to the success of the Welcome Meeting for the Shandong Delegation. Thanks also to International Business staff member, Maria Davis, Erica Breedlove, Human Resources, and Loretta Edelen, Community Outreach.

    ACC will receive $80,000 in federal funds to enhance trade-related education and support the establishment of a Mexico trade center according to a news release from U. S. Representative Lloyd Doggett. Jan Smith, International Business, says the grant will give ACC the opportunity to provide the educational component for international business initiatives in the Austin area to support continued economic growth and recovery for the region.

  • Regina Swearengin, program coordinator for Diagnostic Medical Imaging/Sonography, is a nominee for the Austin Business Journal Health Care Heroes.

  • Sheila Ammons, Accounting program coordinator, and Brian Voss, Associate Professor of Accounting, worked 10 Saturdays preparing 101 e-file returns, over 60 paper-filed returns and answered questions for 25 taxpayers. They worked with two current ACC students, one former student, and two IRS employees.

  • Special recognition to Gale Spear, program coordinator, and Linda Welch, from the Child Development program along with Dawn Leach and Katie Campbell from the ACC and Garza Child Care Centers for their tireless work on pulling together information and data that qualified ACC for a state reimbursement of approximately $90,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission.

  • Dr. Richard Fonté, ACC President, has been elected to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors.

  • Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President of Instructional Support Services, served as one of three tri-chairs for the first meeting of the Johnston High School Futures Committee hosted by Eastview Campus. Also, in partnership with AISD, a letter was sent to parents of four priority AISD high schools encouraging them to take advantage of financial aid opportunities as their teenagers consider ACC or other colleges this fall.

  • The Eastview Campus is providing the computer classroom for the Tech Tots Early Childhood Initiative, a United Way/Capital Area program developed to increase school readiness skills for low-income preschoolers and bridge the digital divide for the families of these children. EVC staff members, Juanita Mendez, and Mary Lou Swart, are serving as mentors for the program.

  • Thanks to Linda Haywood, Senior Clerk in the Campus Manager's Office, Cypress Creek, for her dedicated efforts in providing leadership for the 2nd Annual Community Art Show and Job Fair.

  • A delegation from the Belorussian Trade Economics University visited Austin Community College on Monday, April 1. Tina Buck and Elizabeth Farrar, from IRT, presented examples of "Quality Assurance" in Distance Learning and traditional classes to the team.   • On April 19, the Early College Start (ECS) Office sponsored a tour of three instructional units and other areas of interest at Northridge Campus to 35 students, the assistant principal, and one chaperone from Not Your Ordinary School (NYOS) charter school. Thanks to Sue Raye, Associate Director of ECS, for arranging the tour and the NRG Campus Manager's Office, NRG Campus Police Department, David Tobey, Digital Publishing, Lynn Jones, Photography, Sue Durban, Visual Communication Design, Cherry Luedtke, Library Services, Louella Tate, Student Services, and Myrna Villanueva, Student Recruitment.

  • A journal reception was held to announce this year's Spring Rio Review on April 15, 2002. Twenty-two student writers and artists contributed to the 2002 Spring Review.

  • Alejandra Pearlman, Judy Arriaga, and Kathy Judge received awards at the International Convention of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society held in Nashville, Tennessee. ACC's Alpha Gamma Pi chapter was ranked in the top 100 chapters out of 1200. In addition, at the state convention the ACC chapter was named 5 Star Chapter, Top Chapter, and received the Pinnacle Award for increasing membership 10% over last year. Judy Arriaga was inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor.

  • In a national Math contest Charles Meeks placed 2nd in individual rankings (out of 5,000 participants) and ACC placed 10th out of 156 community colleges. Regionally, ACC was first overall with 4 of the top 11 students and Charles Meeks ranked top student.

  • The 26th Annual ACC Student Art Exhibition was held April 5 - 28 in the Julia C. Butridge Gallery at the Dougherty Arts Center.

  • The Center for International Programs and the International Student Office sponsored a "Pizza Time Study Break" for international students on Riverside, Rio Grande, and Northridge campuses during April and early May. Pizza and refreshments were served and information was provided on INS requirements and special programs for international students.

  • ACC received extensive media coverage on the Health Careers Building Groundbreaking with most TV and radio stations covering the event. Yvonne Van Dyke, Dean of Health Sciences, was interviewed for a feature story in the Austin American Statesman about the shortage of healthcare professionals in Central Texas. Yvonne also appeared on a FOX 7 morning newscast to discuss ACC health sciences programs.
