BOARD OF TRUSTEES "KUDOS" REPORT, 11-05-01

FACULTY EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

• James "Red" Wassenich and Ina Midkiff are ACC's nominees for the Minnie Stevens Piper Award. This is a totally faculty-driven nomination and so it is especially significant that they have been recognized by their peers for this award.

Two other candidates were also considered by the faculty - Deborah Hill and Corinne Irwin. We extend our congratulations to all of them.

ACC has had one Piper Professor in the past, Dr. Katherine Staples.

• Sheila Ammons, Accounting Professor, has been nominated by ACC for the AACC/Microsoft David R. Pearce Faculty Technology Award.

STUDENT TRANSFER RATES

• The UT Austin Admissions Office recently provided ACC information on its Fall 2001 transfer students. As the largest feeder institution for UT Austin, ACC students make up nearly a quarter of the total transfer student population for UT.

Also, first year academic performance data was provided on ACC transfer students for both Fall 2000 and Spring 2001 Semesters. ACC students did as well or better than the average for all students who transfer to UT Austin.

ENGLISH-AS-A-SECOND LANGUAGE

Mary Corredor, ESL Professor, has been accepted as a presenter at the TESOL 2002 Convention. Her session is entitled, Educating ESL Students Across the College. TESOL is Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT AND CULINARY ARTS

• Brian Hay, Associate Professor of Culinary Arts, and Virginia Lawrence, Associate Professor of Hospitality Management, Travel and Tourism, and their students, created a moving tribute to honor the 250 food service employees who lost their lives during the September 11 attack on New York.

On October 19, a tribute dinner re-created the Windows on the World restaurant menu. The five-course meal was fantastic, beautifully served, and local entertainment was provided by the Lucky Strikes. The evening raised over $10,000 for the American Red Cross.

GRANTS

• Jere Hammer, Associate Professor of Nursing, has written three grants which have been submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. These grants were written with the input of Seton and St. David's Hospitals.

The primary focus of the grants is on increasing the number of graduates from our nursing program.

• Thanks go to Tyra Duncan-Hall, Provost of Eastview and Riverside Campuses, and Linda Young, Dean of Grant Development, for their work with City leaders on the East Austin Empowerment Zone Application.

Only nine new areas in the country will be designated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development as Empowerment Zones.

CYPRESS CREEK

• The Cypress Creek Campus hosted a local blood drive and enrolled three people in the National Bone Marrow registry. The event got good local coverage in the Hill Country News. Thanks to Tom Applegate and his staff for coordinating this event.
