BOARD OF TRUSTEES
"KUDOS" REPORT, 09-04-01
I
am looking forward to being able to provide the Board with "good news" about our
faculty, staff, and students each month, and want to thank you for recognizing the
importance of taking time to publicly acknowledge the good things going on in our
institution.
Since we are just beginning the semester, the report will be very brief this evening.
NEW SEMESTER
We have had an extremely smooth Fall registration, and the first week of classes went
well.
It is inevitable to have some glitches, some complaints during registration but I
can honestly say this past registration had fewer than I have ever experienced. Our staff,
advisors, counselors, and classroom faculty have done an excellent job enrolling over
28,000 students.
FACULTY/STAFF
Robert Blodgett, geology professor, conducted a workshop on Earth and Planetary Sciences
programs for the Project Kaleidoscope 2001 Summer Institute.
Project Kaleidoscope is an informal national alliance focused on strengthening
undergraduate programs in mathematics, engineering, and the various fields of science.
Professor Blodgett also recently was on local television, with a story on the
aquafer monitoring device which is located at Northridge Campus. ACC is believed to be the
only college in the State with such a device.
North Harris College recently studied ACC's Art Metals program and praised it, and
indicated they will be implementing a very similar program based on ours.
Art Metals is a "marriage" of idustrial technolgy welding and applied arts,
developed for commercial purposes. Jewelry Fabrication and Metal Sculpture are offered
along with Code Welding and other related courses. This program is under the leadership of
Warren Donworth.
Linda Young, working with the Manor ISD, was instrumental in helping to secure a
$100,000 Hewlett Packard @ School Grant which will be used for community technology
initiatives in Manor.
