Faculty/Programs
The Economic Development Council and Communications Council of the Chamber of Commerce recently thanked ACC for its help in developing a CD-ROM that will be used to recruit businesses to the Greater Austin area. The Chamber's Communications Council worked with
Ed Osborn, a Council member, to explore the idea of an ACC visual design class taking this on as a project this semester.
Linda Smarzik, and Deborah Hill, Department Chairs, for Visual Communication Design and Radio, Television, Film, and Professors
Andrew Saldana, and Mike Scannell all contributed to getting the project underway. After a meeting to test themes and determine content for the CD-ROM, ACC students began their work.
ACC will be a core partner in The Teams Partnership, a collaboration among 11 core school district partners, the UT Dana Center and ACC.
Mary Parker, Professor of Mathematics, will head the TEAMS work in Statistics, and
Dr. David Fonken, Dean, will serve both on the project's senior management team and on its scientific advisory board.
Tom Husak, Music Professor, and the ACC Big Swing Band performed at the 20th Anniversary Gala of the Board of Directors of the Women's Advocacy Project. 400 people attended the Gala at the UT Alumni Center.
Gerhardt Gast, ESL Professor, has been selected by ACT to serve on a five member advisory group for a computerized writing test being developed by ACT.
The National Science Foundation has expressed their sincere appreciation for the valuable contribution made by Dr. Stephen B. Rodi, Math Professor, who participated in their recent panel review of proposals submitted to the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program held in Arlington, Virginia.
Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services, recently completed service for the Texas Book Festival, something she's done for seven years. Today, the Texas Book Festival is considered to be a premiere literary festival. First Lady Laura Bush serves as honorary chairman.
Staff
The Health Professions Institute has been awarded the 2002 Award for Excellence from the Texas Association for Community Service and Continuing Education. This award was given for the Clinical Technician Program. The organization is comprised of two year and four year institutions. This is the second award the HPI staff has received. They also received the National Council of Continuing Education and Training Exemplary Program Award in 2001.
Kirk White leads the program.
IT staff, headed by Bill Carter, Information Technology AVP, successfully moved the Datatel system to a new server, and in less than half the time originally projected. The new server has 16 times the processing power of the old server, and greatly reduces the amount of time to process key functions.
Barry Silverberg, Project Director, Adult Literacy Organizational Training Project
(ALOTP) Director, Center for Community-Based & Nonprofit Organizations, has been invited to participate in the 20th Annual Governor's Volunteer Awards (GVA) as a Blue Ribbon Panelist. Administered by the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service and the Office of the Governor, GVA acknowledges volunteers whose commitment to community and service to others is exemplary.
Mary Hensley, Instructional Support Services AVP, serves as Co-Chair of the Executive Council Board of Greater Austin@Work and has volunteered to serve as the agenda chairperson for the Summit meeting to be held on April 9th at the Convention Center. CEOs, economists, and school superintendents will attend this large event. Mary is working with staff from the Capital Area Training Foundation to plan the event along with
Cecile Sanders, Dean of Workforce Education who has joined the Greater Austin@Work Committee membership,
Sharyl Kincaid, Executive Director of Tech-Prep, Mike Midgley, Dean, and
Mary Kohls, Department Chair. Dr. Richard Fonté also serves on the Greater Austin@Work Executive Council Board.
Mary Hensley represented ACC at an AISD Community Meeting where AISD Trustees discussed finalizing goals and policies related to community and peer outreach, improved student academic achievement, and enhanced partnerships with area institutions.
On January 1, Tom Applegate, Executive Dean, became the First Vice President of the Oak Hill Business and Professional Association. As First Vice President Tom is responsible for programming, and has reserved the April 3rd meeting for an ACC presentation.
Tom Applegate will also be participating in a national web cast on Tuesday, February 4th, at the National Center for Research in Career and Technical Education. He will be doing a 45-60 minute presentation on the topic, "America's Changing Workforce - Implications for Career and Technical Education."
Beverly Silas, Board Trustee, was the presenter for the annual staff development exercise for the Testing Centers in January. Participants in the training were

On Tuesday, February 11, Instructional Technology & Faculty Development (ITFD) will host a presentation by a CLEP representative to discuss the various CLEP exams in composition and literature.
Evaluation and Instructional Technology & Faculty Development (ITFD) has completed a project to have the spring evaluation request available online on the Faculty Evaluation website. Previously, instructors and supervisors were required to manually fill out a form to request a spring evaluation. Now, they can simply log onto the faculty evaluation website and complete the online form. The information is then added to the database used to initiate the spring evaluations.
Sandy Gaskin, Dean of Continuing Education, received a scholarship to attend the Workforce Development Institute in February.
Edward H. Osborn, Executive, Marketing & College Relations was informed that the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has selected Marketing's "Values-Based Communications" proposal as a presentation at the Annual Convention in Dallas in April.
As chairman of the Mathematics Task Force Institutional Effectiveness Committee, John Thomason thanked
Ziv Shafir in ACC's Office for Institutional Effectiveness for providing the Math TF with a an enormous amount of data. Ziv was most cooperative, encouraging, and accommodating and "most importantly, he was extremely competent and provided us with exactly the information we needed."
Theresa Harkins and Thomas Sigg in IT Operations successfully implemented the ACC Online Services project. ACC OnLine allows students and faculty real time access to registration, grading, class rosters/schedules, transcripts, and eCommerce. Over 4,000 students have utilized the new services, including 20% of registration activities now occurring over the web. 733 faculty used the electronic system to input grades for 1901 sections (approximately 3000 sections total). There were very few problems experienced. This is an outgrowth of the ACC OnLine Services Committee, chaired by Theresa Harkins, and thanks go to members
Linda Kluck, David Lydic and Carol Harper, who provided invaluable
assistance.
Students
ACC has been selected as the winner in the Community Involvement Category for Keep Austin Beautiful. This is a result of Student Life organizing this volunteer opportunity for over 200 ACC students.
Cheryl Richard, Student Life Coordinator, staff and students will be honored February 12 at the Hyatt for their hard work.
Lori Sanchez is the SL Volunteer Program Liaison that organized this ongoing event.
ACC former students, Nancy E. Greene, Adam E. Dennick, John M.
Frazier, Brandon P. Cain, Ifeolu O.Ogunleye, and Kimberly R. Smith were recently recognized at the annual Transfer Recognition Awards ceremony at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The ACC dance students performed at the Trail of Lights in December. Darla
Johnson, Department Chair, stated, "close to 200 people got a taste of what ACC and our dance program are all about." Students will participate again next year.
