  BOARD OF TRUSTEES "KUDOS" REPORT, 09/09/02

    ACC

ACC was featured in the August 2002 publication, Building a Career Pathways System, Promising Practices in Community College-Centered Workforce Development of the Workforce Strategy Center, a non-profit management consulting group that focuses on the creation of public systems that promote career pathways leading people to high-wage, high demand employment.

ACC was highlighted extensively for its workforce education programs and three key components were cited critically important; Executive Vision, Industry Guidance, and Community Connections. Capital Idea and Capital Area Training Foundation partnerships with ACC were also recognized.

  Faculty/Programs

Steve Rodi, Professor of Mathematics, presented results of the CBMS2000 survey, as they apply to two-year college mathematics programs, to a group of National Science Foundation program officers in Washington, D. C.

Dorothy Barnett, Professor of Creative Writing, was invited to present this fall in a program entitled, Losing Geography, Discovering Self sponsored by Maricopa Community College. The program will explore migration, assimilation and community building. Ms. Barnett was also elected President, Two-year Program Caucas, Associated Writing Programs.

Linda Anderson Welsh, Associate Professor, Child Development, was selected to participate in Natural Allies (Natural Allies: Working with Community Colleges to Prepare Personnel to Provide Quality Services for All Young Children in Natural Environments). This project prepares higher education faculty, family members, agency representatives and service providers to serve as leaders in early childhood/early intervention preservice personnel preparation.

Dean Julie Todaro, and Professors Red Wassenich and Teresa Ashley, Library Services, and Tina Buck, Instructional Design Specialist, Faculty Development, represented ACC at the Association of College and Research Libraries Invitational Conference on Best Practices in Information Literacy Programming. ACC was selected because its application demonstrated an understanding of the nature of information literacy and the characteristics of an effective program.

Margaret Peloquin, Riverside Head Librarian, presented a daylong workshop entitled, Understanding and Using Medical Terminology, at the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting.

Tim Altanero, Professor of Technical Communications, and the ACC Localization Generalist Certificate Program were featured in an on-line newsletter produced by Localisation Industry Standards Association, a premiere localization organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. In the article Brenda Hall, CEO of Austin Test Inc., states, "ACC is a remarkable academic institution committed to ensuring support for corporate customers. The faculty saw the need for this type of program and began to explore ways in which it could be implemented." Ms. Hall was recently nominated to serve on the ACC program advisory committee.

  Staff

Ed Osborn, Marketing Executive, was selected to participate in Leadership Austin 2002-2003 and will start classes September 13.

Terry Bazan, Director of Financial Assistance, was asked to serve on the Council for the Management of Education Finance of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation.

A proposal submitted to the Rural Community College Alliance by Dr. Barbara Mink, Board of Trustees, Ron Brey, Associate Vice President, Instructional Resources and Technology, and Dr. Luanne Preston, Director of Early College Start, was chosen to be presented at a conference in mid October.

On September 13, Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President for Instructional Support Services, Sandy Gaskin, Dean of Continuing Education, and Sharon Duncan, Continuing Education Coordinator for Teacher Career Programs, will host a meeting with Ron Kettler for the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC). The meeting is to share information with all community colleges on Alternative Teacher Certification Programs, and how to write SBEC applications for approval to offer certificate programs. Representatives from community colleges statewide will attend.

Continuing Education extended sincere thanks to Pauline Hargrave, Director of Programming, and her staff in Information Technology, for implementing the new payroll system for CE instructors. Pauline was also commended for "being there at a moment's notice" during the auditors two-week visit in Business Services.

Community Outreach thanked Albert Perez, Coordinator, Workforce Continuing Education, for his efforts in setting up Conversational Spanish at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

  Students

Congratulations to Spring 02 Advanced Screenwriting students. Bernadette Nason and Michelle Stanush were selected for the Movie Midwifing reading series this fall. Johnette Duff made the third round of the Nicholl Fellowship (sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences), and Susan Turley had a successful festival screening of her directorial effort, THE M.O. OF THE M.I. in Hawaii, and the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Sidney Brammer, a local screenwriter and ACC adjunct faculty, taught the class.
