Faculty/Programs
Dan Dydek, Associate Professor of
Psychology, was featured in Innovation Abstracts, a weekly publication of the
National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development Board (NISOD). In his
article entitled, Humanizing the Technology, Professor Dydek describes strategies
for improving teacher and individual student interactions via computer time-expanding
office hours and personalizing discussions about projects, exercises, and quizzes.
Program Coordinator Brian Hay was invited to "cook something up" for reporter Laura Whitley of KTBC, FOX 7 TV during a live
morning segment at Eastview. ACC's Culinary Arts Program recently received accreditation
from the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Education Program, which makes ACC only one of
three programs in Texas to earn this designation.
Five metalworking students in the Welding
Department have departed to Koblenz, Germany to begin their two-month internships at the
Metall-und Technologiezentrum (Metal and Technology Center). Four students, Suzanne Bass,
Troy DeFrates, Jarrod Kirkpatrick, Peter Rehme are working on their Associate of Applied
Science degrees in Welding Technology, and Starr Taylor is working on the newly approved
AAS degree In Jewelry. The last two weeks of their internships will be served in
Luxembourg visiting industry to observe business practices.
Staff
An article written by Dr. Richard Fonté,
ACC President, was featured in the OPINION Section of the September 17, 2002 Community
College Times. In the article he discusses "the nature of the technical
education or "tech-prep" curricular pathway in high schools and the advantages
and disadvantages of maintaining this pathway as "separate and distinct" from
the "college-prep pathway". Dr. Fonté states, "It may well be the time to
recognize that a single pathway is now essential to preparing students for the education
and skill levels for the critical jobs of the 21st century."
On October 1, Sandy Gaskin, Dean of
Continuing Education, Sharon Duncan, Continuing Education Coordinator for Teacher Career
Programs, and Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President for Instructional Support Services,
hosted a second statewide meeting and formed a consortium of Texas community colleges with
the goal of sharing and collaboration in the development of Alternative Teacher
Certification Programs. Pam Tackett, former chair of the State Board for Educator
Certification (SBEC) and consultant with the Texas Community College Association was
included in the consortium developments.
Sally Craycraft, Account Executive for
Career Programs in Continuing Education, has been invited to serve on the Georgetown
Chamber of Commerce Board in a newly created position, Associate Board Membership for ACC.
This position will allow ACC to keep the Chamber Board informed about recent developments,
upcoming course offerings, and potential customized training opportunities.
Director of Support Services, Sharon King,
will present at the 2002 Austin Human Resource Management Association (AHRMA) Diversity
Day on October 18. Her session, The Diversity Challenge for Educators and Employers,
will examine the challenges that are changing the nature of campus and workplace
environments and review the extensive recruitment and retention strategies and other
expanded diversity efforts that have emerged. She will cite research she gathered on the
higher ed institutions for the Community Action Network (CAN) report, Closing the Gaps
data, and other related demographic and economic trends that will impact colleges and
corporations alike.
ACC
To better serve the needs of the ACC faculty
and staff the Instructional Technology and Faculty Development office has recently
initiated a new college-wide "Workshop and Event Registration" system. It has a
brand new look and can be accessed by an employee's email login and password to view
workshop and event offerings sponsored by ACC departments, register or cancel
registration, or view attendance history.
