The ACC History Department offered its yearly "Bob Lain Historical Symposium" on October 12th at Northridge. The theme of the symposium was "U.S. Diplomacy: The Quest for Peace in Troubled Times" and featured the following presentations from H.W. Brands, Glasscock Chair of History at TAMU, Theodore Roosevelt and the Shape of the Modern World, Robert Divine, Professor Emeritus at UT, The Wilsonian Tradition in 20th Century American Foreign Policy, Allan Purcell, Professor of History at ACC, America's Small Wars Between the World Wars, David Lauderback, Professor of History at ACC, Making the World Safe for Democracy: The Evolution of Counterinsurgency Policy During the Cold War, and Suzanne Summers, Professor of History at ACC, 9/11: The Human Impact.

Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services, and Leslie Navarro, Assistant Professor, Library Services were invited to visit the White House by First Lady Laura Bush to join members of the Texas Book Festival steering committee to discuss the upcoming festival. Held in Austin on November 16-17, the festival will feature authors Anne Rice, Rick Bragg, Sandra Cisneros, and Richard Peck. Money raised will support the Texas Library Association grant program.

The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) recently awarded continuing accreditation for the next seven years to the Medical Laboratory Technician - Associate Degree program after their site visit in April 2002. NAACLS also awarded accreditation to the Phlebotomy program based on the continuing approval process which included the submission of a Self-Study Report in March 2002.

The ACC Teaching Awards Committee announced their nominees for the Minnie Stevens Piper Award. They are Andrew Saldana, Professor of Visual Communications Design, and Clint Davis, Professor of Anthropology. The Piper Foundation awards 15 $5,000 awards each year to professors at Texas colleges and universities in recognition of superior teaching.

On October 28, representatives from the Texas Tech University Hill Country MITC (Multi-Institution Teaching Center) in Fredericksburg visited with staff from Instructional Resources and Technology and Early College Start at Highland Business Center to discuss possible programs to be offered by ACC and TTU at the Fredericksburg MITC. On October 29 ACC staff traveled to Fredericksburg to tour the ACC/TTU teaching center and discuss areas of collaboration in distance learning resources and on-site and electronic support services.

  Staff

Tom Applegate, president-elect of the national Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), and Executive Dean for Cypress Creek and Pinnacle campuses, presented to business people involved in career and technical education advisory committees at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center near Dayton, Ohio. He met with students, faculty, staff, and administration to discuss ways career and technical education can be improved in the US. Tom was also quoted in an article entitled, Career and Technology Students Doing As Well As Others, in the San Antonio Express. As president-elect, Tom also attended the ACTE Executive Committee meeting in Wilmington, NC.

Liz Coccia, Interim Associate Vice President for Retention and Student Services, presented at a conference on October 18 in Round Rock for the Alcohol and Drug Ministry of the Diocese of Austin for training of clergy.

Dr. Richard Fonté participated in a work group to discuss Perkins Re-Authorization. He was named to the committee by the Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education of the U.S. Department of Education, Carol D'Amico. The committee discussed issues of transition from high school to community college, tech-prep, and the community college's role in adult basic education.

On October 21, Austin Community College received eight "Medallion Awards" at the District IV National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Medallion Awards recognize outstanding marketing and public relations work at community colleges in the South-Central region of the country, including Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. The eight winning entries are as follows:

The Cypress Creek Campus once again hosted a safe Halloween party for Cedar Park and surrounding areas. The party attended by 600 was planned and implemented under the leadership of Naomi White, Campus Manager. Other very active participants were the administrative staffs from the academic and student services areas, members of Phi Theta Kappa, and Simon's Café. The Hill Country News covered the event with a photographer.
