  Faculty/Programs

  • The Short Film Group (SFG) in Hollywood has notified Dorothy Barnett, Associate Professor of Creative Writing that her script, Scent of Roses was selected as a semi-finalist in the 2nd Annual SFG Short Script Contest. Finalists will be announced in the next issue of The Short Skinny. The winner will receive a prize of $10,000 and filming.

  • Professor of History, Andres Tijerina was featured in a recent article in the Oak Hill Gazette. Dr. Tijerina spearheads a state-wide effort to create a Tejano monument on the Capitol grounds. Last year the Texas Legislature unanimously passed a bill to authorize the monument. Dr. Tijerina is also a consultant on Disney's epic film, The Alamo, directed by native Texan, John Lee Hancock, and produced by Oscar-winner, Ron Howard.

  • Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President of Instructional Support Services, was invited to participate in AISD's Board Community Connection meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to solicit insight and feedback on the Results Policies, as they relate to higher education.

The Reading Curriculum Task Force's Academic Triangle Program, has been selected for presentation at the nationwide conference for the National Association of Developmental Educators (NADE) to be held in Austin in February 2003. Academic Triangle is three courses offered in one block of time. Phase I of the program accommodates students who enroll in Fundamentals of Reading, Writing, and Basic Study Skills. Phase II offers Reading Skills, Writing Skills and College Study Skills. Caryn Newburger, Associate Professor in Developmental Writing, teaches the writing classes; Ann Dillon, Instructional Associate for the Learning Labs, teaches the study skills, and Cathy Jeanne Smith, Reading Curriculum Task Force Chair, the reading courses. ACC counselor, Patti Singleton is assigned to work with the Academic Triangle classes.

  Staff

  • Linda Young's, Special Assistant to the President, Governmental and Community Relations, proposal to the Community College Futures Assembly Bellwether Awards was selected as one of the top 10 finalists in the Planning, Governance & Finance category. Her presentation will be presented in February.

  • Raquel Gavia and Aleta Garcia had roles in the drama, The House of Bernarda Alba, presented by Different Stages at the Auditorium on Waller Creek, November 8 - December 1. Raquel, Professor of Foreign Language, was featured as Prudencia, and Aleta, who played the part of Martirio, is a Coordinator for Special Projects for the Virtual College of Texas at ACC.

  ACC

  • Beverly Silas, ACC Board of Trustees, participated in Profiles in Leadership, A Symposium sponsored by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce on November 12. The symposium spotlighted influential leaders representing government, business, economic development, collegiate and professional sports and public service. Other speakers were Angelos Angelou, respected expert in economic development, and Phillip Russell, executive Director of the Texas Turnpike Authority. Other panelists were Reid Ryan, Round Rock Express, Gary Nelon, Mayor of Georgetown, Nyle Maxwell, Mayor of Round Rock, Linda Harper Brown, State Representative, Suzanne Brooks, Judge - Williamson County, Dianne Johns, who led effort to rebuild Jarrell, Ahrey Smith, TIP Strategies, and Tim O'Neill, Professor and Holder of the Tower-Hester Chair in Politics, Southwestern University.

    Ms. Silas also made a presentation to the Leadership Round Rock class on November 19.

  • Mr. Stanley Young, who presents a workshop to jewelry students in the ACC welding department, was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education - A Different Setting. Mr. Young, a principal stone setter for Tiffany & Co., created designs including the 129 carat diamond necklace Audrey Hepburn wore while promoting the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. The workshop, given by 82-year-old Mr. Young one day a week, teaches the craft he's practiced over the past six decades.
