  Faculty/Programs

David Potter, Adjunct Physics Professor, recently had a paper published in the January issue of The Physics Teacher entitled, "Phase Changes in Reflected Sound Waves." Over 10,000 teachers in high schools and colleges around the world read The Physics Teacher.

The Welding department, headed by Tim Strouse, received thanks from Jason Schrock, Manufacturing Supervisor, Applied Materials for its support and assistance to Producer Integration, a contractor of Applied Materials.

The Texas Library Association Library Instruction Round Table has notified Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services, that ACC's Chemistry 1411 Lab Library Research Project/Online Tutorial has been awarded the TLA LIRT Library Instruction Project of the Year Award. Congratulations to Teresa Ashley, Professor, Library Services, who spearheaded the project, and Linda Clement, and Red Wassenich, Professors, Library Services.

During the past year and a half a number of ACC faculty and staff worked tirelessly with AISD, Seton and St. David's Hospitals, and Capital Area Training Foundation to develop the Health Sciences Institute at Lanier High School. Mary Hensley served as the point of contact and coordinated the process leading to the formal Memorandum of Understanding. Yvonne Van Dyke, Jere Hammer, and Eileen Klein were instrumental in developing a process for AISD graduates to enter ACC nursing and health careers programs. Yvonne also assisted in the development of the MOU. Sharyl Kincaid and her staff in the Capital Area Tech-Prep Consortium developed articulation agreements for Tech Prep course credit, and Sharyl has allocated tech prep funding for the Institute. Cecile Sanders assisted in many ways, including development of graduation plans and ordering equipment and materials. Luanne Preston and Sue Raye worked diligently to establish the needed dual-credit courses that would fit into the Recommended and Distinguished Achievement Plans for the Institute graduates. Cile Spelce and Toni Gardner arranged the press conference which also resulted in local television and newspaper coverage. Tom Applegate and Louise Hasty also provided support with this project.

  Students

The ACC Phi Theta Kappa Chapter did well at the Texas Regional Convention. They came home with 7 awards including: 1) 5 Star Chapter; 2) Pinnacle award for increasing membership by 10%; 3) Travel Award - awarded to the chapter who traveled as many miles times the number of attendees; 4) Top Chapter - based on activities in the 5 hallmarks (submitted essays and chronological list of activities); 5) Outstanding Chapter President, Velvet Webb (only one chosen for the state of Texas); 6) Outstanding Chapter Advisor, Mary Kohls (only one chosen for the state of Texas); 7) The Chapter ran for District V Vice-President and won.

  Staff

Bill Carter, Associate Vice President, Information Technology, was notified recently that the ACC eStaffing system was awarded the National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) 2002 Exemplary Initiatives Honorable Mention. Bill will give a presentation on the benefits of eStaffing, and receive a plaque at the NCIA conference in April.

The newly implemented eVendor program sends Pioneer funds electronically to companies, which expedites posting of funds to shortly after payday rather than the 2-3 day lag time in the past. Gerry Tucker, Associate Vice President of Human Resources, Ben Ferrell, Vice President, Business Services, and Bill Carter, Associate Vice President, Information Technology have been working on the project. Business Services, IT and Benefits and Payroll are all working to include all vendors on the electronic system.
