  Faculty/Programs

Alberto Quiñonez, Professor of Electronics, was recognized by Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center (MATEC) as an outstanding faculty member and asked to present at its 1st Bi-Annual Learning Invention Lab.

Creative Writing Department Chair, Dorothy Barnett, presented on starting a two-year program in creative writing and presided over the two-year caucus at the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) held in late February.

Mary Kohls, Department Chair, Computer Sciences, and Advisor to Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), received a $100 stipend for ACC's Alpha Gamma Pi chapter as part of the Pinnacle Scholarship award which recognizes chapters that increase the acceptance rate of eligible students by 10% over the previous year.

Chris Ollier, in conjunction with Marc English Design, worked on three pieces that were showcased in the Step by Step Graphics Top 100 Awards. Chris teaches advanced graphic design courses at ACC. 

Josh Kight gave the Paul Hanna Lecture at the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth this past year. Additionally, he was awarded solo shows at St. Edwards University, Tarrant County College, Gallery 1114 in Midland and a 2 person show at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts. Josh teaches basic graphic design and illustration, which are foundation courses in the curriculum. 

Sam Coronado was honored with having several pieces published in, "Contemporary Chicana & Chicano Art (Artists' Work, Culture and Education)". The book was published by the University of Arizona Bilingual Press. Sam also teaches basic graphic design and illustration courses and is owner of Coronado studios. 

  Students

Oscar Casares, a former Creative Writing student, will sign his just released book on March 6 at BookPeople, beginning a 12 city tour to promote his short story collection about life in South Texas. Oscar shared this information with Creative Writing adjunct instructor, Bonnie Orr.

Another former student, Manford Milligan, was recently featured in the Austin American-Statesman, profiling his successful music career. 

Chloe Weiss is a former student who is currently working for O Magazine (Oprah's Magazine) and a recent Mead Westvaco Papers Student Annual Report contest winner. 

Thanks to Leslie Pearson, Student Recruitment Specialist, more than 100 new students applied to the Associate Degree Nursing Program since June 2002. 

Students in the Visual Communication Design department won several awards sponsored by the Austin Advertising Federation (Addy Awards). Yuriko Mitsuma won a gold award for Package Design; Maya Kwan was awarded a gold for her Letterhead System and Katrina Caputo received a silver award for Package Design. Jenice Schnell was accepted into the Graphic New Talent Annual 2002. Debby Wolfinsohn also walked away with a First Place prize at the Two Texas Show.

Visual Communication Design students, Yuriko Mitsamo, Debby Wolfinsohn and Yasuko N. Kay, were winners this past year for the 2002 Top Dog Awards. The annual event is hosted by AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts). 
Jennifer Angelo has been accepted into one of six spots at the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Communications for medical illustration. 

  Programs

A press conference for the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Health Sciences Institute at Lanier High School will be held on March 26. ACC's Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President, and Sandy Gaskin, Dean of Continuing Education have been working on this project. Dr. Fonté has secured a commitment from the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, Carol D'Amico, to attend this press conference.

The Commercial Music Management department, headed by Chair Geoffrey Schulman, will sponsor a two-week Summer Camp at Northridge for high school students thinking of pursuing a music career. Funding for the program was donated by Jessica Winslow, a patron of the music industry and friend of Louise Hasty, Executive Dean at Northridge. 

   Staff

Terry Stewart, Director of Faculty Development, was recently elected Treasurer of Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA).

Mary Hensley, Associate Vice President, Instructional Services, has been appointed to the Board of Capital Area Training Foundation (CATF).

GED Testing Procedures submitted to the Texas Education Agency by Michiel Davis, GED Testing Center Manager, received an Excellent rating. The procedures are an important component of the contract process. Nearly 8,000 GED Exams were administered last year. 

Neil Vickers, Budget Coordinator, Business Services, received notification that he passed the CPA exam. It was his first attempt.

Steve Kinslow, Executive Vice President, Academic, Student & Campus Affairs, has been appointed for a second year as Chair of Leadership Round Rock.
