Sybil Noack, Professor of Developmental Reading, was named the
2003-2004 Developmental Educator of the Year for the state of
Texas. The CASP Association (College Academic Support Programs)
honored Sybil for her years of work on behalf of developmental
education and especially for her efforts during the most recent
legislative session. She has also authored a customized book for
developmental education published by Pearson. All royalties from
the sale of this book go to the ACC Foundation Scholarship Fund.
For the first time, ACC had more payments via Online Services than
on the telephone registration system. Bill Carter, Associate Vice
President, thanks the Support Services and programming staff in
Information Technology for their hard work and support of the
On-line Services system.
The Creative Writing department headed by Lyman Grant had a
positive and successful presence at the Texas Book Festival. At
the ACC booth copies of The Rio Review, books, and chapbooks by
ACC creative writing faculty were displayed. Tapes were shown of
Borderlands, a film by Sidney Brammer, a poetry video by Joe
Hoppe, and John Herndon’s Poetry Journal, produced by Texas
Nafas. Donations were accepted for the ACC Foundation/Creative
Writing Scholarship.
Rex Peebles, Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was selected
to serve on a committee to develop the Field of Study for teacher
certification in Early Childhood – 12, Special Education.
Sandy Gaskin, Dean, Continuing Education, and Donetta
Goodall, AVP,
Academic Education Programs, made the presentation, “Beyond Our
Borders: How Foreign Partnerships Can Be a Winning Solution,” at
the National Council for Continuing Education and Training, in St.
Louis, Missouri.
Donetta Goodall was selected as a 2003 Champion for Children and
recognized at the 4th Annual Awards Luncheon as one of 13
exceptional volunteers for the Casey Foundation which sponsors
children in Foster Care and supports a special program which funds
their pursuit of higher education/job training.
Linda Haywood, Campus Manager and Cathy Munk, Administrative
Assistant, carried on the Cypress Creek Campus tradition of
hosting a community Halloween Carnival. Over 100 people attended
this annual event. Faculty and staff donated baked goods for the
cakewalk and many helped with set up and clean up of the campus.
The Information Technology Support Services department received a
Level I Baldridge Award from the University of Texas at Austin
Center for Performance Excellence (UTCPE). The Level I is designed
for organizations that are beginning to adopt and/or have recently
introduced performance excellence principles. ACC was one of seven
organizations receiving the award in Austin. Bill Carter, AVP,
Theresa Harkins, Director of Support Services, and Tom
Sigg,
Manager, Computer Operations attended the UTCPE Awards Banquet on
November 3 to receive the award.
The head of the educational programs department at the IRS at
Austin recently commended Robert Cano, ACC Senior Cashier, for
going above and beyond to provide her with assistance.
At a recent Austin Housing Authority banquet an enthusiastic
audience applauded Mary Harris, Executive Director, Adult
Education, and her staff when a resident was recognized for
achievement at ACC.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Nursing Innovation
Grant Program (NIGP) has awarded two grants to ACC. Promoting
Retention in Distance Education “PRIDE” Project submitted by
Nursing Department Chair, Jere Hammer, was awarded $273,263. In
NIGP Category B, a grant proposal to help improve retention rates
and completion of Anatomy and Physiology courses was also funded.
Eileen Klein, Assistant Dean of Health Sciences, submitted the
proposal.
