ClientSide News, an international publication serving the globalization, localization, and translation industry, has selected ACC’s Continuing Education Division as 2004 Education Provider of the Year. This international award recognizes ACC’s trend-setting Localization Certificate Program overseen by coordinators Bob McGoldrick and Dr. Tim Altanero, as well as the program’s localization summer school conducted annually in partnership with the University of Limerick in Ireland.

English Professor Lyman Grant has been invited to participate in the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Aug. 11-22 on the campus of Middlebury College in Vermont. About 200 poets, fiction writers, and memoirists are selected from over 1000 applicants to work in small classes and individually with teachers, editors, and agents. Now over 75 years old, Bread Loaf is one of the most respected writers' conferences in the nation. Grant will participate in the poet category.

The ACC Learning Labs held their eighth annual conference “Building Bridges and Opening Doors” May 10 at the Eastview Campus. More than 130 tutors, faculty, and staff participated in 27 workshops, with topics ranging from brain research to student retention strategies to deaf culture. The Learning Lab Managers organize all details of this yearly training event, and plans are already under way for next year’s conference.

Compensation Supervisor Vicki West earned her master’s degree in organizational leadership and ethics from St. Edward’s University on May 8. During the course of study, West maintained a 4.0 GPA and received the Presidential Fellowship for the fall 2003 semester.

Ron Brey, associate vice President for instructional resources and technology, was one of three speakers at a general session of the Texas Distance Learning Association Conference held in March. The session, “Quality and Cost Effectiveness,” was co-sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Sloan-C. Also, Brey has been appointed by the Texas Association of Community Colleges to chair the Virtual College of Texas SACS Task Force. This ad hoc group will review SACS standards on distance learning and determine if VCT provides appropriate access to information, including faculty credentials, and has the procedures necessary to ensure that member colleges can be in compliance. The task force will submit its report with recommendations to TACC this summer.

Congratulations to the following faculty for receiving teaching excellence honors during the recent graduation ceremonies:

Early College Start (ECS) Associate Director Sue Raye helped judge senior projects at Leander High School on May 5. More than 400 seniors completed the required projects, which included a portfolio, research paper, resume, reference list, thank you letter, and an eight- to 10-minute presentation before a panel of judges. “Leander seniors are well-prepared to meet many challenges after high school with the experience they gained from the dozens of teaching objectives in their comprehensive project,” Raye said afterward. “The fact that Leander and Cedar Park HS are in the ACC taxing district, that the ISD stands behind such an impressive program, and many of the students are ECS students, is an impressive demonstration of an educational partnership at its best.”

The University of Texas at Austin recently honored ACC Interim President Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow as a distinguished graduate of UT’s Community College Leadership Program. The Washington Post featured a story on May 25 regarding the partnership between Austin Community College and San Marcos Independent School District to increase the number of students entering college after graduation. Leading ACC’s part in the initiative were Dr. Mary Hensley, associate vice president of instructional support services; Dr. Luanne Preston, Early College Start program director; Dr. Kathleen Christensen, associate vice president of Retention and Student Services; Terry Bazan, financial aid director; Linda Kluck, admissions and records director; and Dr. Sharon King, director of recruitment and student support services.
