A monitoring visit was conducted by the Texas Rehabilitation Commission to review ACC's Interpreter Services financial compliance with TRC interpreter contracts. Because no programmatic or financial findings were identified TRC will finalize its contract with ACC Interpreter Services, which is headed by Steve Christopher.

Austin Community College's College and Career Preparation Program, headed by Mark Kincaid, has been nominated for the 2004 Bellwether Award. The award is granted annually at the Community College Futures Assembly to community colleges and similar associations with innovative and outstanding programs. The 2004 Assembly will be held January 31-February 3, 2004 in Orlando, Florida. 

Mayor Will Wynn proclaimed October 22 as Jan Smith Day in Austin. Jan Smith, Department Chair of International Business, completed her term as chair of the International Partnership of Greater Austin and was recognized for bringing the International Center of Austin to fruition during her tenure.

Margaret Peloquin, Riverside Head Librarian, has been elected to the Executive Board of the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association. The chapter covers Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. She is also a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.

Congratulations to Nick Sarantakes, Department Chair, and the Real Estate Department which had 17 students eligible for graduation in August 2003. 

Tim Strouse, Department Chair of Welding, spent a day assisting welding teachers and students at Stoney Point High School in Round Rock setting up their new lab, showing them how to use new equipment, and giving students demonstrations.

AMD-Austin extended thanks to their AMD external partners including Tyra Duncan-Hall, Provost of Campus Operations, when they were named a corporate winner in the Samaritan Center Ethics in Business Awards.

Mary Kohls, Department Chair for Computer Information Systems, Vernon Griffin, Professor, and Sue Raye, Associate Director of Early College Start, received special thanks from Kathie Herrera, principal of New Hope High School, an alternative high school in the Leander Independent School District. They assisted the alternative high school with special testing arrangements and on-line access for three students who needed a personal computing class.

The Austin Chapter of the International Good Neighbor Association congratulated Tom Husak, Professor of Music, for his twenty years of service at ACC, as one of the most progressive artists, educators and concerned musicians of Texas.
