The University of Central Oklahoma invited Ben Ferrell, vice president of business services, to present his paper “Show Me the Money: A Guide to Profitability in Course Offerings” during the Southwest Business Symposium March 31-April 3 in Edmond, Okla. Dennis Elam, assistant professor of Accounting at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, is Ferrell’s co-author.

The Visual Communication Design program was cited in the New Directions for Community Colleges journal (Edition No. 126) as an example of “good practice of program level assessment” for the program’s student portfolio assessment plan. ACC is only one of six community colleges cited in the report.

English as a Second Language Associate Professors Shannon Bailey and Gerhardt Gast presented divergent research results on computer-assisted writing instruction during the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) International Convention and Exhibit held March 30-April 2 in San Antonio .

ACC has completed an upload to the federal SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) through the efforts of Student Services and IT staff. Assisting from Student Services were Carol Duss, international student admissions coordinator, and Linda Kluck, admission and records director. Assisting from IT were Thomas Sigg, assistant computer operations manager, Kathy Galaviz, applications development manager, and Linda Pope, senior programmer analyst. SEVIS is a computerized system that maintains data on foreign students and exchange visitors during their stay in the United States.

Gina Palacios Grochow , Distance Learning production and operations specialist, was a SXSW Web Award finalist for the website “Does Your Vote Count?” Grochow co-created the site with classmates for a C omputer Supported Collaborative Learning course at UT-Austin.

Media Relations and Public Information Office communications specialist Veronica Obregon was awarded a scholarship from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) to attend the organization’s New Professionals Workshop and annual District IV conference April 2-6 in Houston .

Dr. Stephen Kinslow, executive vice president of academic, student, and campus affairs, spoke March 30 at the Texas Association of College Technical Educators conference held March 30-April 1 at the Omni Downtown.

Students

 


Five students and three faculty and staff advisors participated in a spring break service learning project at the Heifer Ranch learning facility in Perryville, Ark. T hey explored issues of world hunger and poverty through classroom and experiential learning activities. Participating students were: Clay Hansen, Candice Lee, Ellie Loggins, Elise Flores, and Heather Frank. Advisors were Rana Jackson, coordinator for Center for Civic Engagement; Allison Von Steiger, Student Life Office administrative assistant; and Gale Spear, Child Development Department chair.

Community

Dr. Stephen Kinslow, executive vice president of academic, student, and campus affairs, joined efforts to launch the children’s book Wiley’s Way (University of Texas Press, $9.95 paperback) by talking about college with the students at Austin ISD’s Campbell Elementary School, 2613 Rogers Ave. Wiley’s Way is part of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s “Go” campaign to promote college awareness and commitment.

Erica Breedlove, Human Resources staff employment supervisor, served as “Principal For a Day” March 4 at Round Rock ISD’s Forest Creek Elementary School, 3805 Forest Creek Drive, as part of Texas Public Schools Week.
