Photography adjunct instructor Sean Perry, named by the Austin Chronicle as one of the area’s top 10 artists of 2004, recently received honorable mentions in the Golden Light Awards in New York City and the 2005 Texas National at Stephen F. Austin State University. He also was named featured artist in the 2005 Finch Paper Calendar, a yearly international competition. Many of Perry’s award-winning images are included in his series titled “Transitory,” to be on exhibit Aug. 4 through Sept. 10 at the D. Berman Gallery, 1701 Guadalupe St.

ACC hosted the 36 th annual conference of the Texas Association of Community College Business Officers (TACCBO) June 21-24 at the Omni Hotel Downtown. Neil Vickers, budget and finance director, and Ben Ferrell, vice president of business services, presented sessions on Budgeting and Program Cost Analysis. Ferrell was elected treasurer of the TACCBO for the coming fiscal year. Business Services Executive Assistant Phyllis Kalz and Administrative Assistant Janine Ramirez coordinated the event. Criminal Justice Department Chair G.W. Hildebrand serves as expert witness on an episode of “Body of Evidence: From the Case Files of Dayle Hinman,” a Court TV cable network series. The episode examines a 1977 murder investigation in Tyler, Texas. It is scheduled for airing in October.

Soon Merz, associate vice president for effectiveness and accountability, recently conducted a half-day workshop for Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board staff on the use of the IPEDS Peer Analysis System. IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) is the data collection system administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. Participation in IPEDS is mandated for all postsecondary education institutions in the United States that receive federal financial aid. The Peer Analysis System is a web-based tool that allows users to access institutional characteristics, enrollment, completions, faculty salaries, staff, finance, graduation rates, and student financial aid data.

Riverside Campus Dean of Student Services Dr. Maggie de la Teja authored the article Community Colleges: Imagining the Future by Exploring Today's Challenges and Opportunities, published June 21 on the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) website. De la Teja also presented at the NASPA/SASCA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators/Southern Association for College Student Affairs) New Professionals Workshop held in June at Trinity University in San Antonio.

The Employment Office drew 146 applicants to its 2005 Faculty/Adjunct Job Fair held July 23 at the Eastview Campus. Many fair attendees expressed how pleased they were to have the opportunity to meet face to face with representatives from instructional departments and receive a preliminary review of their applicant materials.

Students

Photo Technology student Richard Garanflo was awarded an outstanding student trophy, and 22 other ACC students received distinguished print ribbons at the Texas Professional Photography Association’s Summer Seminar held June 26-29 in Kerrville. The event draws professional photographers from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico as well as Texas. Of the 274 photographs featured in this year’s seminar, 60 belonged to ACC students. They were: Penny Burt, Carolyn Coffey, Sarah Cornelius, Richard Garanflo, Tania Guinsberg, Rebecca Hilscher, Brian Lewis, Brian Lipp, Esmeralda Lopez, Mike McAfee, Barbara Preising, Frank Ragan, Keith Rizzo, Jennifer Sanford, Gwen Scott, Jessica Their, Rama Tirumalachar,Sergio Trevino, Mariana Tutuianu, Elizabeth Williams, and Casey Woods. In addition, Adjunct Instructor Kathryn Watts-Martinez was awarded two distinguished print ribbons for her work.

 Homa Caldwell-Tomas and Louise Pettigrew received $1,000 scholarships from the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program. They were among 400 community college students nationwide to be honored for their academic achievement and community service.

Community

The Texas Youth Commission presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Building and Construction Technology Department for its continued service to the Turman House, a state juvenile correctional institution transitional facility. The department’s Construction Gateway program provides construction skills training to Turman House residents.

Dr. Louella Tate, Northridge campus dean of student services, was elected chair of the Texas Council of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. The Texas Council is a consortium of 41 community centers serving individuals with mental illness, mental retardation, and chemical dependency. From July 6-8, Tate presided over the 20th annual Staff and Trustee Conference in San Antonio. In addition, she serves as the chair of the Central Counties Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation, which serves  Bell, Coryell, Milam, Lampasas, and  Hamilton counties.
